Having said all that, this is the only one that I'd call 4 stars vs. 5, because some of the stuff with the whales is pretty silly in parts, and the 80's chick in charge of the whales is quite the caricature. Definitely a good film for your library if you like Star Trek.
It is the second best Trek movie to "Wrath of Khan" , and perfect for a family night with trekkies and non-trekkies alike.
The wit and humor of this film separates it from all the other Star Trek films, but it was Nimoy's foreshadowing of things to come that likewise makes it prophetic because 17 years later in 2003, Stanford University released a study that focused on the genetic harm being done to whale species by commercial whalers.
The study clearly showed had previous estimates were wrong but more importantly showed that whale populations are being reduced to point where they may longer be genetically viable. Yet, the pressure remains to hunt these species into extinction. That's why this film should be required viewing in every biology class in the nation.
