This was a fun, entertaining, and, er... explosive Star Trek book. The Enterprise plays host to a Tizarin wedding between two rival families, Lwaxana Troi arrives as a Federation ambassador, and just when you thought it was gonna be boring, Q shows up for the party. Peter David is an amazing author (the best of all the Star Trek novel writers in my not-so-humble opinion), not only because of the humour he incorporates, but for being brave enough to team up the formidable Lwaxana Troi and the troublesome Q. As you can imagine, some of the dialogue is fantastic. The writing is brilliant throughout and the characters are just as they should be. This is one heck of a novel, and definitely one of those that should have been made into an episode. (Q getting chased across the Enterprise by Lwaxana in a suit of armour? - I rest my case). OK, maybe it isn't quite so great as "Imzadi", but hey, it's fun to read, original and full of non-stop action. What more couldja want?

This has to be, without a doubt the funniest Star Trek book ever. Peter David is my favourite ST writer, and I love all his books, especially 'Imzadi'. I think that and Q-in-law should definately have been made into ST:TNG episodes. My favourite part of the book was when Lwaxana was chasing Q through the ship, because it's great to see him get what he deserves for once! There were also some good scenes with Riker and Troi. The other story, about the Tizarin wedding was also well written, and the two stories balanced each other well. Buy it if you like your Star Trek books with humour, Q, and lots of character interaction. Don't buy it if you hate Q, you like 'serious' Star Trek and if you like reading about the Enterprise getting blown up. I would recommend this book to anyone.

This is one of my very favorite Star Trek novels! It is a hilarious story about Q investigating and experimenting with the concept of love. However, we have the added bonus of having Lwaxana Troi in the mix. It makes for a very amusing and entertaining read!

I was also able to listen to the audiobook at the same time I was reading it. While the audio version is abridged from this actual book, it is a treat indeed to listen to it as it is narrated by the same actors that portrayed Q and Lwaxana Troi on the Next Gen series: John deLancie and Majel Barrett. It adds a new level to reading the book, no matter how many times I had to pause it to catch up to where they were reading from parts that had been cut out.

If you are familiar with the Next Generation universe, I highly recommend you check this book out. There are a lot of great lines and scenes within it and it is well worth reading!

I can't think of a more entertaining premise to The Next Generation than having Troi's Mother suddenly wield the power of Q. We saw what happened when Riker held it for a short term, but oh the possibilities if Lwaxana could be in that same situation... With 'Q In-Law' we find out exactly what that situation might have been like.
I rarely (if ever) laugh out-loud by myself while reading almost anything--especially a science fiction novel...but I sure did while reading this one, and more than once, I might add. I simply cannot spoil the enjoyment of this story by revealing too much of the plot, but suffice it to say that Q regrets his allowing Lwaxana to wield this power in a supreme way. Peter David is certainly one of THE BEST Trek authors out there, and this one is certainly one of THE most entertaining Trek stories of all-time. I found myself just WISHING on more than one occasion as I read this book that they had made this one into an actual episode--it would rank as one of the best I assure you. Now if you like this story, do yourself a BIG favor and pick up Peter David's fantastic 'Q Squared'--it is everything this one is (but not as funny) and a lot MORE. Easily one of the most complex Trek stories ever written, and also one of the most satisfying as well. Only serious Trek fans need apply if you know what I mean.

Great book but I'm very disappointed in the quality of my Kindle purchase. After spending $8.99 for an electronic book, I was disappointed to find a bunch of spelling errors and other grammatical problems in a book that was first published in 1991. It's almost as if they turned a rough draft into the e-book! I recommend the book, but you'd probably be better off buying the paperback.

If you've read many of the earlier Star Trek The Next Generation novels to include Peter David's work, you will have found that his stories are among the most intriguing, hilarious and captivating among them. "Q-In-Law" is no exception to that and, in fact, this particular novel is a step above his already high standard of writing. Few of Star Trek's authors' capture the characters as well as Peter David does and even fewer are capable of dignified comedy with the characters as Peter David is.
The premise:
The Enterprise is chosen as the site for a wedding between two powerful but rivaled families of the space faring merchant raced called the Tizarin. As is custom, Captain Picard is quite happy to be hosting the wedding right up to the point in which the Federation delegate from Betazed shows up, Lwaxana Troi.
Captain Picard now finds himself attempting to dodge the romantic overtures from Lwaxana Troi and still run his ship. Everything seems to be going smoothly until Q shows up to examine the human concept of love. Everything seems to fall apart from there. Q's experiment in love with Lwaxana Troi turns haywire on him and from there you will find that you're reading one of the most hilarious and engrossing early STNG novels!
The Audio Tape:
As an added bonus, this particularly great story was produced as an audio book as well! It is made even better having been read by Majel Barrett and John de Lancie themselves. This audio book is certainly a great way to spend three hours on the highway!
I highly recommend this novel and the audio tape to any and all fans of Star Trek as they're both extraordinarily entertaining! {ssintrepid}
