I was a big fan of the Next Generation and I am a fairly big fan of Star Trek in general. For me this is and isn't Star Trek. On the one hand, it has some familiar characters, a familiar setting and a familiar backstory. This series is about a retired admiral Picard who goes on an adventure related to his backstory with Data and involving Romulans and Borg. On the other hand, it doesn't completely feel like traditional Star Trek. The look and feel often make it seem more like a Star Wars series in some ways. It's not so much like the traditional stand-alone Trek episodes that each deal with some interesting topic or issue but rather a season-long adventure that has lots of action, escapes, mystery.

Overall, it's a fun and engaging story that keeps you wanting more. From a technical standpoint, it suffers the same issues as other newer versions of Star Trek in that Romulans don't really look like Romulans, the technology seems way more advanced that it should be based on what was out there in the previous series and some of the action and dialog is so fast-paced in places that it's easy to miss things or lose the thread. These are somewhat small nitpicky things that don't necessarily make it a bad series, just different than what we were used to.

Overall, I'm giving this four stars because it was an enjoyable show and it was fun to see some of the characters again and imagine what might have happened to them since we last saw them in the Next Generation or other shows. I'm leaving one star off because it just didn't feel quite like Star Trek in places.

The whole series is excellent! The challenges faced by the characters are more psychological and "human" than other Star Trek stories. It's different that other series, but really outstanding. No camp at all. Loved every minute!
It's wonderful to see supporting actors from the old series, some of whom were VERY young when they started, really honed their craft. And of course the greats like Stewart are always wonderful to watch.

Most of Star Trek and other similar science fiction is often like an outer space western It gets old quickly. I would rather watch a Randolph Scott or a John Wayne movie. I expected this series to be more of the same with complicated twists in the plot similar to the Discovery Series or Pirates of the Caribbean 3 or the grossly over emphasized action of the Lord of the Rings movies. But instead the series had depth like the Tolkein books about the love of the land, or reading interesting characters by Dickens, Dumas, Hugo, Sir Walter Scott, or Jane Austen. The series was thoughtful with something to think about and consider. My kids thought it was slow, but I thought it was intriguing like reading Emma or Pride and Prejudice. One could observe the evolution of characters and their reactions to a changing time. In fact I thought for the most part, the series was brilliant. The supposedly bad guys (the Romulans) were not really bad guys, just a group with a different history and with grounded historical fears. It illustrated how different groups can be both right and wrong. The series demonstrates how the careful and imaginative writing and artistic creation is no longer found in traditional movies nor traditional television. The series suggests the importance of understanding culture and history, plus the relevance of retaining handcrafted methods. Old characters are folded into the story and new characters emerge, forming a blend as the universe changes. It may be odd that some may think this series had the potential to be a classic for our time, but it well may. Only the action near the end reminded me of those science fiction westerns, the rest was great to watch, with no interrupting commercials nor click-bait journalism. There is too much in today's technological world that is intrusive, exploiting, and corporate biased. I am sure most do not give it much thought. However, the Picard series offers an opportunity to reflect-- good-bye sports networks, social media, and air travel (they are all disgusting experiences) -- plant a garden, watch the stars, and listen to the birds (these are things that make our planet rich). Picard would understand.
