Since I don't want the hassle of an exchange/return I'll just make my issue a case. Really enjoy Star Trek since 1973. And glad I ordered by as you can see from the photos my case was broken. Scotty can't fix it either.

The first season of “Star Tre: Strange New Worlds” takes place in 2259, 5 years after the original “Star Trek” pilot episode – “The Cage” – and 6 years before the events of “The Original Series.” The show picks up in the aftermath of “Star Trek: Discovery” season 2, with the Discovery and Michael Burnham having traveled to the future and the events surrounding their disappearance classified. The show features Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Ethan Peck as Lieutenant Spock, and Rebecca Romijn as Number One, all roles these actors originated on “Discovery.” Familiar characters joining the crew and series include Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), Dr. Joseph M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), Cadet Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), Robert April (Adrian Holmes), George Samuel Kirk (Dan Jeannotte), Kyle (André Dae Kim), and T’Pring (Gia Sandhu) Newcomers include La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia), and Hemmer (Bruce Horak).

The prime universe version of Captain Pike only appeared twice before this, but picking up after the events of “Discovery” creates some interesting drama for the character with him possessing foreknowledge of his fate from his time on Boreth. The stories also return to a more episodic storytelling format, though the characters still develop over time as they did in ’90s Trek. The first episode explores the key message of “Star Trek” while introducing the new characters and settings. From there, “Children of the Comet” offers the chance for Cadet Uhura to shine, while “Ghosts of Illyria” looks at Dr. M’Benga and Number One. “Memento Mori” focuses on La’an Noonien-Singh’s background as “Spock Amok” offers some fun for Spock, T’Pring, Number One, La’an, and Nurse Chapel. Later episodes continue to focus on the types of moral dilemmas that make “Trek” great while exploring new worlds and cultures and even returning to some familiar ones to examine them in greater depth. It helps to develop characters that were only briefly glimpsed in previous “Star Trek” iterations while advancing the franchise forward. The writers honor what came before as they create another great addition to the Trek Universe. It’s a great time to be a “Star Trek” fan with so many well-made shows to choose from, a second golden age after the highlights of the 1990s-2000s when there were regular new episodes and films. Each of these manages to be distinctive while pointing the way forward for the franchise.

This Blu-ray steelbook set is a great addition to any fan’s home media collection. Beyond the lovely packaging, the set includes featurettes, a gag reel, deleted scenes, and audio commentary.

I had more or less given up on new Star Trek after watching the first half season of Discovery, but some trusted friends told me that I had to give Strange New Worlds a try, as it captures the feeling of TOS and TNG that I had come to miss.

I'm happy to report that with this series (and the return to the episode of the week type of stories), mission accomplished. The episodes are fun and, though not always great, they're fairly solid. The lighting, camera work, and set design are leaps and bounds ahead of what Disney has been doing with Star Wars (aside from Andor, which also excels), the writing is excellent, with character arcs I care about, and the cast is excellent.

Of course, this is a review of the 4K UHD and not a general series review, and I can say it delivers top notch video and audio quality, far surpassing the streaming quality. There are some fun extras and the image really pops in Dolby Vision HDR. The steelbook is beautiful and I'm glad I spent the few extra bucks over the regular case, something I almost never do.

I'm eagerly awaiting the 4K UHD release of season 2. This show exceeded my expectations and made me anticipate watching new Star Trek again.

This is an incredible series that’s worthy of Star Trek cannon. First, one minor critique, the series’s modernized set designs are epic but appear far advanced of the original series. Next, the Enterprise ship redesign works overall by appearing as a tooled down version of the original Star Trek movies, the Motion Picture through VI. Finally, the best parts of this series are its nuanced characters and the show’s outstanding writing.

This series has an expansive cast of Enterprise crew. Captain Pike is the poster child for ethical and humane leadership. He’s the type of commandeer that gets the best out of his crew, but at times he lacks the risk factor of a James T. Kirk. The series has Augment characters, genetically-enhanced humans, who live in hiding or were bullied for that stigma. The cast rounds out with several characters that aren’t around for the original series, and some who are—like Cadet Uhura, Spock, and some other surprises. The greatest surprise character in season one is Nurse Chapel, who is wild and vivacious; it makes one wonder what happens to repress this personality during the original series run, but it must be something extraordinarily personal.

Now is a perfect time to discuss the writing for the series. The original series’s mission was to “seek out new life and new civilizations” and this show holds to that mission. This show’s standard of serialized writing leads character development across the ten-episode season. However, some episodes in this season deliver some of the most shocking endings to seeking out that new life and those new civilizations. Star Trek has always been a mirror to our Human problems and presented as an alien culture so it becomes easier to assimilate and examine. This series seems to be a keeper!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoying the series so far, just 2 episodes in.
Reviewed in Australia on May 30, 2024
It was with much trepidation that I decided to give Star Trek Strange New Worlds a chance.

Now this is how hard core and dedicated a Star Trek fan I am... I purchased the 4k Hi-Def Bluray set of this season and Season 2 to boot. (is that gambling enough?)

The fear was Star Trek Discovery, a series that simply was not Star Trek, ripped off a computer game called Tardigrades in every way shape and form and then had the audacity to spit in the face of one of the greatest Star Trek writers of all time. That would be the great Dorothy C. Fontana (you will see her credited as DC Fontana in many Star Trek episodes and books etc.) The Spock proposed in Discovery was preposterous, the captain was hideous, the constant crying and essentially SJW bashing was complete and utter garbarge wasted on an audience that already gets diversity and acceptance of all life forms. Worst of all it attempted to re-write canon and this is where I wrote the entire production off as a disgusting farce that should never have been made.

Star Trek Picard gave me hope though. That was great Star Trek and I enjoyed every episode, purchased all the Blurays to add to my collection and even supported it further through novels and graphic novels etc. Then Star Trek Lower Decks was hilarious and really added something fresh to the great Star Trek legacy.

So with those 2 great series I got a feeling of hope for this one and decided to blindly go where a die hard Star Trek fan was fearing to tread. For the first issue, the same actor who played the poorly written and horrible Spock in Star Trek Discovery (Ethan Peck) would reprise the role for this series. OH NO!!! I groaned, this is not a good start.

However, in this series, the character has been given the chance to emulate a young Leonard Nimoy(impossible to ever come near the calibre of the great Leonard) surprisingly a much better effort and I can't blame the actor for the crap fest that was STD. In Strand New Worlds (SNW) Ethan is finally playing Spock, he obviously get's the Leonard Nimoy character and the writers are honoring DC Fontana again. ABOUT TIME!!!! So that was much appreciated and I'm enjoying the episodes so far.

There's a touch too much of the women must get the final say and back chat the captain nonsense which I find is not necessary. All the female actors are wonderful and there's no need to be adversaries, getting along is the best and the Pike actor played by Anson Mount thankfully doesn't take the bite and provides excellent retorts. Star Trek has always been about equality there's no need to have SJW moments like Discovery, here's hoping the writers trend moving away from SJW garbage, continues with SNW.

The ship is excellent and the sets are lovely but as a die hard fan, I felt they should have been toned down a touch to more accurately simply represent the original bridge more, we've all seen the episode/s "The Cage" and we know that original ship like the back of our hands. The current Enterprise interpretation is not claustrophobic enough for my liking in honor of the original, however it does allow Star Trek Enterprise to merge well in a way(especially the medical bay) so I can understand why it went for this set design.

Thankfully a return to thoughtful Star Trek is back and writers have been selected which understand the importance of what Star Trek represents, one aspect of which is promoting ideas outside of standard vernacular that assist in promoting ideas which promote sound social ideas for consideration as well as great Science Fiction. Sometimes we need to look at things with a different point of view and Star Trek has always promoted that. It's great to see that returning here.

The effects can not be faulted. Top notch and amazing.

The seemingly harmful asteroid with a pre-ordained destiny was superb and I really like the actress playing Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) a fine actress doing justice to the great Nichelle Nichols legendary character.

Here's hoping the series can sustain the quality I'm seeing so far.

Not what I would class as absolutely perfect, however a darn site better than the series I don't even want to mention anymore.

Here's to go boldy where no man has gone before(check it out if you don't believe me, that's actually the correct way to say it.)
