Top customer reviews
There is a lot that I don't like about this figure. While the paint is mostly good, the little cover on top of R2's head that covers the spot for the lightsaber does not line up nicely and looks like a lazy paint job. Everything else looks great but this one little cover looks absolutely sloppy and I don't know how these types of things get through quality control unless there is none. While I like the accessories, the only one I really think looks nice is the periscope attachment. The lightsaber could have been cool if it could have stored all the way down in the body or didn't poke out of the head quite so much. For me, they are nice additions, but for the most part useless. Finally, when it comes to the third let function, although it is a cool feature, the only way to properly use it is to extend it all the way out which looks way too long. It also seems very thick and does not look like it should when fully extended. I supposed you have the option to not extend it all the way but you are left with two choices then; to do one full rotation and not have the leg touch the ground and look ridiculous, or extend it to what seems the right amount and have R2's head turned the wrong way. The only option I will use is keeping the leg up and having R2 stand on 2 legs which is pretty sturdy still.
So just about all of the added features seem pointless to me. If the figure had just the periscope, the head covers were painted nicely, and the leg could be extended to the appropriate length without turning the head backwards, I would easily give this 4-5 stars. If it included a simple blinking light, a slew of R2 sound effects, and replaceable batteries, I would think this was the best R2 available.
As it stands, it's ok and I will keep it at my work desk on two legs. I think many will enjoy the figure but it is not an easy recommendation for me.
UPDATE: I did find that playing around with the twist-able dome did allow me to position the third leg to the appropriate length with R2's head facing any position I want. I'm thinking about upgrading the review to 4 stars but the paint issue on the dome still bothers me a bit too much to give it 4 stars.
This is R2-D2 from the Black Series 6" line, as seen on ... well, every episode of Star Wars: I to VI.
The articulation of this figure is as standard for many such astromech droid figures:
- rotating dome,
- swivel legs and hinged ankles,
- extending third leg (controlled by dome rotation), and
This figure have plenty of features that I like. The front vertical panel open to reveal its utility arms, the dome compartments can be removed to plugin the sensor attachments or hold Luke Skywalker lightsaber hilt, and swappable deployed rocket boosters panels on the side of the legs. So you can have an R2 for every almost every scene on the movies.
However, there is room for improvement. I thought that the size of R2 would bother me as it is a commonly known issue, but that is not the case. Apparently, R2 is supposed to be almost a meter tall and this figure is ~3 1/8" tall which (using 1" = 1') converts to 3" and 2.5" tall; almost a meter.
The thing that really bothers me of this figure is that this R2 unit is too clean. R2 would only be clean in ceremonies, if any. However, how can you put a dirt wash on this figure and still remain "universal" to all the movies? I don't know how and neither did Hasbro.
Finally, there is the issue with the extensible third leg being controlled with the rotating dome. Not a bad Idea, but I think that R2 ends up with a leg way too extended while facing forward.
In all, this is a great figure with sufficient gadgets to "pose" R2-D2 for most scenes of the Star Wars movies.
