From the Author
For the teething set, the books serve as true word primers, since each felt image is paired with a toddler-friendly word such as "sister", "run", "boy", "swing", "fly" or "stop". Because the books trace the main narrative arc of each movie, as children get older, the books become storytelling vehicles. Parents (and kids!) can elaborate on the Star Wars characters and plotlines (and don't be afraid to throw in your best Yoda, Darth Vader or Chewbacca imitation). Even if you're not entirely familiar with the original Star Wars movies, there's no "wrong" way to read Star Wars Epic Yarns. You or your child can just make up the story! The point is to make the reading experience fun and exciting. And finally, for teens and adults, Star Wars Epic Yarns serves as a humorous and ironic piece of fan memorabilia, perfect for the coffee table to stir up nostalgia for movie-going days gone by.
The primary technique for making the figures in Star Wars Epic Yarns is needle felting, which is essentially sculpting with wool. This is a painstaking process which involves stabbing loose wool thousands of times with a specialized barbed needle. This entangles the wool fibers, making the wool firmer and firmer. It took us nearly a year to create all the Star Wars figures and spaceships in wool, build all the scale-model sets, and do all the in-studio or on location photography. We even flew to California and Arizona to find real desert to recreate the scenes on Tatooine! As lifelong Star Wars fans, it was important to us to get the books just right. Think of Star Wars Epic Yarns as the ultimate, year-long craft project! It was definitely a labor of love.
We hope you have as much fun reading and sharing the books as we had in making them. And May the Felt be with you!

Holman's foray into the world of children's books began with his twin brother Jack. They grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia, and first began writing and illustrating books together in the third grade. They are the twin powers behind the board book series Star Wars Epic Yarns, which offers a lightspeed take on each of three original Star Wars movies, and Cozy Classics, which abridges classics like "Pride and Prejudice" and "Moby Dick" into 12 words and 12 needle-felted illustrations.
"Great Job, Mom!" and "Great Job, Dad!" are Holman's first solo kidlit projects.
Holman is a former middle-school teacher. He has an education degree, a masters degree (architecture history) and a law degree, all from the University of British Columbia. Holman currently practices law while finding time to make children's books.
Holman and Jack's unique artwork combines needle felting, scale-model set-making and photography. Their work has been exhibited at Bologna Children's Book Fair Illustrators Exhibition (2013), The Original Art exhibition in New York (Society of Illustrators, 2015), and the National Museum of Play. Their work has also been featured in the New York Times, People, the Wall Street Journal, the Huffington Post, The Telegraph, New York Magazine, The Paris Review, Parents magazine, American Craft magazine, CBC, and The Globe and Mail.
Holman and Jack are also the creators of the Google Doodle honoring the 148th birthday of Laura Ingalls Wilder (of "Little House on the Prairie" fame), which appeared on February 7, 2015.
Holman lives with his wife and two children in Vancouver, Canada.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2017My son loves these books, as a 2 year old fan of Star Wars. We first introduced him to the story through these books. He can pick out all the characters and it's a fun book for me to read to him. We have 2 of the 3 Epic Yarns books. Can't wait to complete the collection.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2022Love this series of books by the Wong brothers, EPIC YARNS!!! My children learned how to read and identify words by reading their books, and with these, I got them interested in Star Wars at the same time! Thats a WIN WIN! I would recommend checking out other titles, especially the Cozy Classics.
I also borrowed from library, but a MUST for your own collection. I also wanted new and not used. Thanks!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2016Bought this for my brother who is a big star wars fan and having his first kid, he really loved the book. Looks like it should hold up for a child and has a good mix of mono and polysyllabic words. Also purchased Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2017These books are adorable. Great introduction to Star Wars for little future fans! I purchased it after seeing it at a friend's house and my (almost) 4 year old fell in love with them.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2020My daughter loves these Epic Yarns Star Wars board books - the characters are super-cute and the story is simple enough for her to follow the pictures and words. She loves it when I add in more details, sounds effects and music too. These have been her favorite books from a tiny baby to a 3 year-old toddler!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2015The book is great for my child. Even though she is only 1 year old, she loves the thick pages that she can turn. She seems interested in the Origins of C3PO and Chewbacca. I have given both of them a creative backstory about raised in the same household as Step Brothers that I am currently pitching to 21th Century Fox...
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2016Warnings to anyone using an iPad, iPhone or the Mac App Store version of the Kindle Reader on a Mac. These series of books ARE NOT SUPPORTED on iPads or iPhones (just kindle fires and android phones & tablets). Further, they will not open on the Kindle Reader app on a Mac that comes from the App Store (you know, the version that we were made to use after Amazon deprecated their directly downloaded version). After 30 minutes with two calls to customer service I had to download their newest version directly from Amazon (didn't know that was still an option) and I can successfully download these three titles in the Epic Yarns series. There is no way to cuddle up with my granddaughter and read these books, however, with my laptop. CS is placing the blame for the tablet/phone restrictions on the publisher of the series, which seems dodgy at best but I wasn't going to get anywhere debating the issue on the phone.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2016Awesome books for toddlers. My 2 young boys love it and know the Star Wars original saga even though they hadn't seen the movies and removes all of the "scary" or dark parts of the story line. I would love it if they released new versions for the 1-3 and 7 movies

Amazon CustomerReviewed in Canada on December 16, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Love it!
We have all three- Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi- in this Epic Yarns series. Ironically, this was the one we got last because it was the hardest to find. Amazing artwork and just one word on each page, so you can keep it simple or make up stories to go with the picture. We love reading these books with our daughter and she loves flipping through the pictures on her own too!
KatkinsReviewed in the United Kingdom on May 28, 20155.0 out of 5 stars May the Felt be with you!
As a needle felter myself I am so excited by the release of Star Wars Epic Yarns. These fabulous set of three books for children ( and Adults I might add having ordered myself all three books lol ) created by Jack & Holman Wang cover the stories of Star Wars A New Hope, Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars Return the Jedi.
Each book has very little written words aimed at using both the imagination of the Adult and young children to create the story from the amazing colour photos. Each photo shows a scene from the movie and is painstakingly created using real miniature sets of such good quality and detail they are worthy of real movie sets themselves. Each scene then shows several beautifully detailed needle felted figures. All the characters are stunning but I have to confess within the three books( there is also Star Wars Empire Strike back and Star Wars Return of the Jedi) it was the Stormtroopers that as a needle felter are my favourite as they they are so perfectly 'felted' and really caught my imagination as to what you can achieve as a needle felt artist. As a Sci-Fi Geek myself I would recommend these as a 'collectors item' as well as a lovely item to give to your children/grandchildren/nieces and nephews. Here's hoping for more 'Star Wars' or Sci-fi adventures from these talented artists.
All three books are available via amazon for very reasonable prices so it's worth buying the set. 'May the felt be with you!....always'
If you love these books please also check out Jack & Holman's range of 'COZY CLASSICS' a range of classic stories such as my fav Moby Dick and Oliver Twist!

You can't start a love of geekery and sci-fi too early and this (along with the Empire and Jedi sequels) is a lovely way to introduce my little one to Star Wars. Beautifully recreated images from the film with single words opposite to sum up the scene portrayed. The start of a geeky nursery library!
