Happily, I found a way to get the games running without needing to run as an administrator or as another operating system. I've testing these settings on two separate systems - one with an Intel i7 and nVidia graphics card, and one with an AMD A10 processor and a Radeon graphics card. First of all, both games are patched to the last official patch available from Lucasarts. To help prevent the game from crashing when playing the videos, just go into the properties for each game's executable file and click on these two settings in the Compatibility tab - Disable Visual Themes and Disable desktop composition. As long as your graphics card supports 640 x 480 (the game's default resolution), you should now be able to run both games without too many crashes.
As for the games themselves, there is a reason these are called two of the best Star Wars games made. BioWare did an excellent job of setting up the story and making it feel like part of the Star Wars universe. Then Obsidian did a great job of continuing the story. If there was a nitpick I have with the game, I would have preferred a little more active combat system and (maybe) controller support. Otherwise, great games and great storytelling.
KOTOR 1 with it's great storyline and OMG moments, I have hardly changed anything of the game except restored some of the original content that was never released.
KOTOR 2 has a dark atmosphere and great character plots, however this was rushed to be released and was never completed. However with this link [search for "tslrcm-18"] you get 99% of what the game was supposed to be. Mix it with other cool mods from the link in the last paragraph you get one hell of a game.
Quick installation notice, you may have to wait up to 5 minutes for the installation wizard to load up. after 2 mins or so try opening the tray and closing it again after you have clicked on the install button, this will load a prompt with an option to "Retry" click it and 1 min later it should load the wizard to install the game.
After that you will have no problems.
Also for anyone in Europe who is reading this, I am from UK and I bought this from the US because I couldn't find it anywhere else. It works perfectly fine and you don't have to change the region of your drive. So buy buy buy xD
Thanks for reading.
Update: After almost a year I managed to find a way to install this game on windows 8 thanks to a guy who helped me on the Gamefaqs PC board.
What I did was that I booted my laptop on safe mode and installed both games and it worked! I'm playing KOTOR I right now and the only problem so far is that during some cutscenes the game send me out to the desktop, but all I have to do is click the game icon on the task bar and continue watching the cutscene and then playing. It could be annoying because sometimes there are two or three cutscenes one after another and every time a new cutscene starts it sends you back to the desktop but again just click on the game icon in the task bar to continue playing. I also experience minor lag while playing but that could be my laptop which is not much of a gaming rig but it does handle these old games. Btw, I'm running the game as administrator but not compatibility mode and is working so far. My advice is that at least you run it as an administrator because I heard that if you don't and later in the game you have a problem that only you can fix playing as administrator the save files you made won't appear it you weren't running the game as administrator before. I will beat KOTOR I before playing II, but I tested it and it loaded as well without problem.
I will continue playing and if I run into any problem I will update this review.
Update #2: Another minor problem I found, don't loose when you are using the ship turret because the game then won't load properly and all you will get is a black screen with sound. Find a way to quit and restart the game and reload your last save if this happens. Just finished Tatooine and now I'm on the Wookie home world, so far so good. Will continue updating this review.
Last Update: Those were the only problems I had, I beat the game. Also back up your save files after every playing session, there's a glitch that will delete them, it happened to me.
