1. Main Title and Escape - 4/5, this is one of the better ones. This track feels more natural and whole than the others.
2. Ahch-To Island - 2/5, feels disjointed (I'm gonna say this a lot).
3. Revisiting Snoke - 3.5/5, not so bad, at least it's focused on a "bad guy theme" as opposed to being a mix of completely different tracks jumbled together.
4. The Supremacy - 3/5, disjointed, but has some intensity
5. Fun with Finn and Rose - 3/5, not too jumbled but not really memorable
6. Old Friends - 3/5, I was disappointed by this one. The first part of the track is good, but it kinda veers off to some other "scene."
7. The Rebellion Is Reborn - 3.5/5, not bad, really, but I had a hard time figuring out where this track fit in with the movie.
8. Lesson One - 3/5, since I know what scene this track refers to, it makes sense to me, but musically, it still seems disjointed.
9. Canto Bight - 4/5, think something like remix of the Cantina Scene track from Episode IV, only in a classier / sleezier setting.
10. Who Are You? - 3/5, the feeling is tense, but the music jumps back and forth between a sort of low brooding to high intensity, disjointed.
11. The Fathiers - 3/5, again, this one was disappointing. This the music for the chase scene on Canto Bight, but once again, it just becomes so disjointed in places.
12. The Cave - 3/5, This track definitely goes with the creepy / trippy feeling I had when watching the scene in the movie, but it's still disjointed.
13. The Sacred Jedi Texts - 4/5, disjointed, but if you skip up to about 2:40 in the track, you hear Yoda's theme, so I raised the rating for this one, cause Yoda.
14. A New Alliance - 3/5, this track was probably the biggest disappointment for me. The "alliance" is Kylo and Rey, and after Kylo kills Snoke, they team up to take on his guards. This could have had an epic battle theme in it, similar to Battle of the Heroes or Duel of the Fates, but nope. It's just a bunch of loud, disjointed orchestra music.
15. "Chrome Dome" - 3.5/5, oddly, even though I (and probably most other SW fans) don't consider Phasma a very important character, this little tuffle between her and Finn is apparently worthy of a somewhat thematic battle track.
16. The Battle of Crait - 4/5, yes, it's still disjointed, but this track has some pretty epic parts to it from older SW tracks, which is a good thing, in my opinion.
17. The Spark - 4/5, this is probably the most unified track in the whole album, and it's a good one. Definitely got the feels from this one.
18. The Last Jedi - 4.5/5, this track is probably the best, though still a little jumbled in spots. That choir though!
19. Peace and Purpose - 3/5, it feels like they just needed some music to wrap everything up.
20. Finale - 3/5, exactly what it says. I wonder if they had a hard time coming up with the themes to pick from the other tracks since most of them were so garbled?
Conclusions: It's mostly just music that goes with the scenes in the movie, not really music that one would want to listen to by itself. In that sense, it's really not much better than The Force Awakens. Now, someone might say, "Of course it goes with the scenes, that's why they call it a 'soundtrack.'" Yes, but go ahead and listen to the soundtrack for Revenge of the Sith or The Phantom Menace. Not only do the tracks in those albums fit with the scenes in the movies, they also contain individual compositions that are enjoyable, masterful pieces of music in their own right. The overarching problem is that the music just seems messy. The individual tracks aren't thematically composed. This was my biggest issue with The Force Awakens soundtrack, and so it is with The Last Jedi soundtrack as well. I don't know if John Williams is just running out of ideas, if he's just getting old, if he doesn't want to work so hard on it anymore, or if it's some combination of those. It's certainly not his best, but again, it's not his worst.
This score has me a little bummed. I was hoping for something better than The Force Awakens but didn't get that. Instead it played more like The Force Awakens Version 2.0. Last Jedi has the dubious distinction of being the only SW score without a strong new theme. I will still listen to it from time to time because I enjoy some of the variations of the Force theme and Rey's theme that JW employs, but I definitely don't think this score is as good as it could have been. The sad thing is that this score is still better than anything anyone else could have written today, which is a reflection both of John Williams' greatness but also the sad state of contemporary film scoring. When I go to the movies and hear lame scores by the likes of Brian Tyler and Henry Jackman, I just feel depressed. I think these composers could write a decent Star Wars score if called upon: Alan Silvestri, Danny Elfman, James Newton Howard, Michael Giacchino, Alexandre Desplat, Patrick Doyle. However, for any of these composers to write something comparable to JW's SW output, they would have to write the ultimate masterpiece of their lives. (Giacchino's Rogue One was okay, but the theme sounded too much like Star Trek - he needs to come up with something new.) There really isn't anyone today who can write the kind of big, complex orchestral scores that John Williams does - The ones who could are all dead!
