Well if there is one thing in this world that is guaranteed to give you goosebumps, this comic is it. The commencement of the original, glorious, world shattering science fiction trilogy, episodes 4, 5, 6; also the greatest love story ever told (yes, i said love story) is told here in glorious hand drawn artwork.

Yes, it looks old and definitely not HD. But neither was the original trilogy. If you are searching for an alternative way to relive those glorious memories of the epic saga ('... Thats no moon... Thats a space station..') then this is worth your money.

Read the books a hundred times? Seen the movies so many times you can quote the script backwards? Then this is for you. And the corners of each page will never tear, bend, fold or fade.

Seriously, i love this. And it is why tablets were invented. Not just for comics. But for star wars comics.

WARNING: This Star Wars Omnibus contains twenty-seven of the cheesiest, cringe-inducing-est comic books ever written.

That said, it's an excellent read.

This omnibus, titled "A Long Time Ago...", contains the first twenty-seven issues of Marvel's Star Wars series from the late 1970s, which was rushed into production in '77 in an attempt to capitalize on the film's success. The series was an enormous success for Marvel, and some consider it to have saved the entire company from financial ruin.

The first six issues are an adaptation of the original "Star Wars" film, while subsequent issues are completely original. Even casual Star Wars fans will notice glaring (and generally amusing) inconsistencies with the film series (such as the physical appearance of Jabba the Hutt or the paternity of Luke Skywalker), due to the writer (Archie Goodwin) possessing little or no insider knowledge regarding the future of the franchise.

Stylistically, this series fits in perfectly among its contemporaries at Marvel in the late '70s. The art is colorful, whimsical, and highly detailed. The dialogue is unintentionally campy and awkward. The storytelling is tight, exciting, and a little silly.

In short, this collection is light-hearted, action-packed fun with gorgeous art and a powerful nostalgia factor.

Unfortunately, that's precisely all you get.

Unlike many other comic book collections, there is absolutely zero supplementary material. No foreword, no Letter from the Editor, no primer on the history of the series, no nothing. The progression is abrupt: front cover, Table of Contents, Page One. The same is true of the end of the volume: last page, advertisement for similar omnibuses, back cover.

Given the importance and storied history of this classic series, a collection such as this should contain at least a little something extra; the absence thereof seems almost rude.

This brought back a ton of memories from when I was a little kid. I think the first comic book I ever purchased (for .35) was a Star Wars comic and it is in this collection!!!! Thanks for the happy memories!!!!!

The condition of the book was excellent but the story lines were, in my opinion, awful. Once you get past the comic rendition of the one of the greatest movies (and movie trilogies), the stories and characters are very limited and in some cases, a little ridiculous.

Great compilation... I grew up reading the first 10 issues, so this is a great revisit to my childhood. All comics within the collection are illustrated as original and it is a great read.

In recent years I wondered why I didn't collect Star Wars as a kid. I love the original trilogy and still prefer the original 1976 version of the film over any of Lucas' updates. After buying all the volumes of Marvels premier run of the series, I recalled why I wasn't interested in the series. After a strong adaption of the film (issues 1-6), the series artist was Carmine Infantino. As prolific and creative as he was for both DC and Marvel, his art style was one I just did not like. I still do not like it.

But I'm pressing through and just enjoying the adventures of our Rebels in spite of Infantino's art. The adventures are creative and fun and it's nice to see that the Marvel Bullpen worked to create a universe of recurring characters and continuity. It's also nice that we weren't forced to an obligatory crossover guest appearance by Spiderman or the Hulk in a contrived accident transporting them to Tattooine or some other location of the galaxy far far away.

Overall, good buy and good fun adventure tales to read of the original Star Wars Galaxy

The original Marvel comics ran for 107 issues. This volume collects the first 27 of them.

Issues 1..6 are a novelization of the movie that started it all in 1977, A New Hope. (That is, 115 pages out of 490, if you care to know.)
Then a few issues are about Han Solo and Chewie and a green human-sized carnivorous rabbit, performing some seriously heroic acts, etc.
Lots of fun.

At this rate, I fully expect that the entire set of 107 issues will be available in 4 volumes, and I want them all. Volume 2 will be available in October 2010 and I've already ordered it from this site. Be careful though, there's also an older edition (set of 7 volumes, not 4), with similar titles, containing the same comics, but in smaller installments. I'd make sure to order the second volume from the new edition (Oct 2010, 480 pages, issues 28 to 54 (or around 54, not sure yet)), not from the old one (Aug 2002, 360 pages, issues 21-38)

Since these comics were written before the second and third movie, do expect inconsistencies. For example Jabba makes a tiny appearance and he looks like a seal on two legs rather than the famous snail-like creature from Return of the Jedi.

From an artistic point of view... I've seen better Star Wars comics, where Han and Luke and Leia looked very much like the actors who played them in the movies. It's not the case here. Still, I did enjoy the artwork. It's not bad at all.
