The box contains everything you need to get going with the Star Wars games and really holds your hand for both the players and the game master. The kit is only a starter version with premade characters. It is not the full game if you wanted to run your own story after you finish the kit. You would need to buy the Age of Rebellion core book.
This one teaches the game well and has fun moments. It has some "cut scenes" where characters lose agency which we didn't like, but not as bad as the Force and Destiny one. This is done to put them in situations to learn different aspects of the game so we were a little forgiving on that. If you want to play an RPG in a story that emulates Rogue One, then this is the game for you.
My recommendation if you want to do one of the Fantasy Flight beginner kits is this order: Edge of the Empire > Age of Rebellion > Force and Destiny > Force Awakens*. I haven't played Force Awakens but the other 3 tie in with a core rulebook with the same name, whereas Force Awakens is its own thing.
I ran the starter adventure with the pre-gen characters that were supplied and all in all it went very well. The rules in the box are designed for folks with little to no knowledge of gaming. Each encounter was designed to teach one aspect of the rule set and the dice. The dice are funky but after a few rounds it was easy to comprehend and they made things a bit more interesting as it introduces events beyond fail or succeed. We have played RPGs for decades (including many versions of Star Wars) and we all liked it.
The set includes 4 pre-gens, starter adventure\how to play guide, a set of the “basic” rules, counters, and double-sided glossy map and dice. The box that the items comes in is very thin and I am not sure that it will survive for long. Also from the FFG web site you can download 2 more pre-gens and an expanded adventure to the intro for free.
All in all I am glad I purchased it and will most likely run a campaign (using the actual rule book and the various supplements).
Just realize what you're buying: a beginner game. This is an inexpensive, high-quality, fun introduction to the Star Wars: Age of Rebellion roleplaying game. Rules that you might want for further gameplay; such as character creation, Force usage during the Galactic Civil War era, armor/weapon attachments, expanded rules for starship combat, critical hit tables, etc; are available via the Core Rulebook. That having been said, I'd still recommend picking this game up for the dice and for the adventure, even if you're buying the Core rules.
Check out the live play of this game on the Potelbat: YALP podcast. It convinced me to buy the game :)
The quality of maps, game tokens and character portfolios is excellent. The visuals certainly inspire the imagination and invoke enthusiasm. What I find most helpful is that each game folder has a printed statement telling you which items to read first, second, and last. Everything about this game was created to assist new players to overcome insecurities so that the game experience is optimized. The written materials are clear enough that even with a learning disorder, I understand what is required of me as GM. I hope new players will give this game a try and not let the technical details intimidate them.
The game materials are a steal for the price, and included is a set of Star Wars dice which sell for $13 all on their own. Highly recommended!
That said this game has a lot of rules but not nearly as much involved in the core rulebooks for the full on game. This scaled down version with physical aids is a great way to break new players into this game system (though the whole dice thing is expensive unless you buy the app). Played it with them and they seemed to have a good time.
I do recommend that if you are buying this for young ones just try to make sure their level of comprehension is enough for them to handle the rules(age minimum is 14yrs) and other than that should be great for introductory players.
