When comparing the hilt to my MR Luke ANH, both of them appear to be the same on first glance. However, the detail is somewhat inferior on this removable blade model. The coloring of the aluminum is a bit mismatched on the control band from the rest of the hilt. (This is something that my Darth Maul removable blade had to a much more considerable degree.) Also, the bunny ears on the hilt have a few scratches on them. Installing and uninstalling the blade is a breeze, though I feel as if it may be possible to damage the saber by doing it too much. It could just be paranoia, but I think it may be best to not switch them back and forth too often. The blade is nice and sturdy, and when ignited, it glows a consistent blue color. One thing my MR has over this one is the brightness of the blade. This one is quite a bit more dim, though I have to hand it to Hasbro for the consistent blue color of the blade. You can't really see the LEDs in the blade at all. It's also a shame they are using AAA batteries rather than AA, which would undoubtedly put out more power and give the blade a brighter glow. What mainly sealed the deal for me on purchasing this lightsaber is the fact that it has an entirely different soundboard. The sounds are actually taken directly from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. This makes this saber much more accurate to the film than my MR version. The sounds definitely have more of a vintage sound to them. The volume is noticeably quieter than my MR and pretty much all of my other Force FX lightsabers, but it works. The belt clip is a neat inclusion, but I wish there was a latch on it, as the hilt just dangles there on a hook. It's certainly a neat way to show off your lightsaber, though. I've always loved the Graflex look of this ligthsaber hilt, and holding it in my hand without the blade feels great. Also included with this lightsaber is a display base, which I always appreciate.
In conclusion, while I wish Hasbro would hold to the same quality standards as MR when it comes to the hilt, I do applaud them for their efforts on improving the consistency of the blade and changing out the sounds so that they are more screen-accurate. The belt clip is a neat addition, but I'd rather they not sacrifice quality for gimmicks. If it came right down to it, sell the clip as an optional piece and make sure the quality of the hilt isn't compromised. Out of all my Force FX lightsabers, this is one of my favorites mainly due to the sounds and the ability to remove the blade and make it look like the prop replica. The MR is of overall better quality, but this one is more interesting due to those two factors alone. All in all, if you're a collector like me, this is definitely worthy of being added to your collection. If you're a fan of the original film or Luke Skywalker, you will like this. If you're new to Force FX lightsabers and are looking to get a blue one with a removable blade, you will probably like this, but you may consider either the Anakin ROTS or the Obi-Wan ROTS as they seem to have more mass appeal. This one is a bit more specific to its character and the film it is from.
Rare and expensive, difficult to find at an affordable price, and the tales of bad experiences are many. More disturbingly, the tales all seem to be telling the same story.
Mine arrived in a damaged box even though it was described as new. Okay, that's a vendor screw-up. No stars off for that. It was missing the handle insert. Same comment. Note that this isn't the only review with these specific complaints though. A note to the vendor is in order before you buy.
The saber itself has a broad and obvious scratch running down the length of the handle. The nasty stickers were applied *over* this, so it is a manufacturing defect, not post-manufacturing damage.
Said handle is almost entirely made of plastic. Blech! For the same price I can get a custom made saber with a metal handle. I know because I went out and priced them.
The sound is not super-loud either. The Obi-Wan sound is much better. Nor was the sound very responsive to motion of the blade. Sometimes it 'whooshes', most times it forgets.
The light-up is way too fast in my opinion.
I'm disappointed that this item arrived in less than great condition, but even more disappointed that it fell so far short of what I was expecting. For the quality of what is in the box, the asking price is way too high.
Mostly metal construction, solid and heavy
Removable blade is great for costume or display
Nice, bright blade color
Screen accurate, slightly wider in diameter
Blade can develop dark spots
Sound isn't as loud as I would have liked
Blade emitter is plastic
First of all, keep in mind you're buying a display piece, not a toy. You can wave them around a bit and experience the lights and sounds, but you can't have lightsaber duels or play rough with them. They're just not designed for that purpose and aren't durable enough to withstand being used in that manner -- which is fine, as long as you know that going into it.
Second, over the years, we've ordered four of the Force FX lightsabers, for ourselves or as gifts. Of those four, three have had defects right off the bat and had to be returned. However, the customer service from the manufacturer has always been EXCELLENT. They've made it right every time, at no cost to us, with overnight shipping on replacements. They even gave us a free lightsaber once for our troubles. Three out of four replacements is admittedly not a very good track record, but the amazing customer service and having a great replica when you do get the good one keeps us coming back. These are the nicest looking (reasonably priced) replicas out there.
