At least until I purchase a second one to test articulation I'm keeping this one MIB for now. However, I first want to note that Hasbro did a solid job packing the product within its own personal mailer for added protection- good thing, too due to the unique shape of the product packaging. There is an external slip cover that, once removed reveals two familiarly-styled panels that open with the release of a velcro catch (similar to those of the multi-trooper packs and the 2016 SDCC Kyle Ren set).
Upon gently opening the panels, the contents are in full view. This set has the most accessories to figure ratio out of all other figures in the black series line, and sculpted in fantastic detail for the scaled size. The Trooper itself is in nearly all aspects the same Trooper we've been seeing on the shelves for the last couple years with the exception that Hasbro replaced it with that of the FO Executioner figure.
There are 10 accessories that come with this figure which is great for those who want to have some variety while top-building- and on the reverse of the slip cover there are three example Trooper variations shown. Everything appears interchangeable which will be nice for those of you who like to do repaints for use with other figures or just want to add accessories to other characters.
Additionally, I noticed with my FO Trooper from 2015 had some overspray issues with the black paint around the helmet and armor and several areas had "bled" over, leaving the figure looking low-quality and disappointing. According to an article earlier this year with Steve Evans, Design Director for Star Wars at Hasbro, they recently started using a new paint application process that would tighten up past paint issues. So far, from The Last Jedi BS line, I believe they are on the right track and that is quite evident in this figure, as well. Everything looks crisp and clean, and so far without removing it from the packaging, I have not noticed any traits thus far which plagued my old FO Trooper. No more Jakku Rey and Poe in X-Wing gear issues here!
All in all, this is a solid figure, and though I'm still not totally comfortable with the $34.99 price point it's currently sitting at (also what I preordered it for back in September), it is Star Wars, it is a unique packaging style, and I was still impressed, so well done. It has good presentation value and could be a nice focal point of your Black Series collection. What I would like to see, if any Hasbro people are looking this over, is maybe a few different accessory kit sets being marketed. No figures, just accessories. I know you've done this in the past for 3.75" figures, and I know it worked well for Kenner too back when they had the production rights. I think this will encourage consumers and fans to further diversify their collections and create more specialty character roles.
**On a final note if you want to preserve the integrity of the packing but still display the contents, use some care when opening the door panels on the inner container, they can easily crease due to the cutouts, but if you gently crease where they join the box, you'll be fine.
I don't normally do reviews, but you're still here, thanks for reading, and may the force be with you all!
The box itself is really nice, there is a slip case, and then there is a dual door window box with the First Order logo doubling as a Velcro closer. This even came inside the original Hasbro shipping box which I never get. This is just a fantastic way to do collector friendly packaging and just a really well done package. The riot shield can be difficult to get onto the figures arms, but he holds the baton nicely. The baton can also be extended and has lots of sculpt and paint details. The standard issued blasters we’ve seen before and are well done, the bigger FWMB-10 repeating blaster is hefty, once you attach the bi-pod you’ll have no issues loading out your troops. The tactical vest pegs on super easy, as does the ammo pouch. The backpack looks very much like the Snowtrooper backpack, and pegs easily onto the back of the vest. The macrobinoculars are great and love that they can be folded.
This might be just another First Order trooper that’s been repackaged and with some extra accessories but for any trooper fan this is a must have. Heck, for Black Series fans this is a must have just for the packaging. I love when companies do stuff like this and just go berserk with the accessories. I’ve got no issues having 10 of the same trooper, but I love having figures like this that give you tons of display options. I will for sure grab a few more of these, this figure comes FULLY APPROVED.
The base figure is only okay to good to begin with. The reuse of the original First Stormtrooper body means it lacks articulation to get him in proper firing positions and action poses. The only update is the helmet to match their appearance in The Last Jedi. At least this time around what few paint apps there is on it are mostly good.
The amount of accessories and their useability are the selling point of this deluxe set, but some of them are not able to be used to their full potential because of the lack of articulation. The web gear and riot gear are among the better ones. The binoculars, standard blaster and heavy blaster, while nicely executed, cannot be held as they should be able to due to the lack of range in the arm articulation.
Overall, it's always cool to get so many accessories with an action figure, but not so cool when much or most of them can't even be used properly. As an army builder figure, $35 is a bit much to build a squad or larger army with and not really worth it for all its cons. Also, not even a great sealed box display piece as the figure does not show through the packaging. I would only recommend it and army build it myself if it were discounted at at least about 55% off or more.
