So I did my research, and what I could get the most out of my money and everything led back to this product.
Packaging: the first impression I had is that the sellers truly wanted the tablet to get to the buyer safe and sound. Opening the box, I was pleased to find a sheet of bubble wrap between the box and the tablet itself. Very happy to see that as my last tablet only had a thin piece of paper to protect it from the box and outside world. Underneath the tablet was another compartment where it held the contents that were the pen, glove, pen holder/mount, instructions to install and the install disc itself. Wrapped up neat and tidy.
Installing: So I read the previous review about the install disc not working, but I wanted to see for myself if this was still and issue. Tried the install disc, didn't work.
Downloaded the XP-Pen Tablet Star 05 software from the website, still didn't work.
So I downloaded the 04 software, and everything was working perfectly from there!
So 4.5/5 stars on installing, only because the disc provided didn't work.
The tablet: I waited a few days before writing this review. I gave myself the time to get used to the new settings, the new (slimmer than my old one) pen and just play on a blank canvas for a few days before starting anything serious.
It is so sensitive! I love it! I don't have to press down so hard to get a nice clean line and minute details is suddenly a lot easier! It can be wireless, which I also tried and I love that I don't have to be so hunched over to work with a limited distance from the old tablet and I can sit comfortably. Its also nice that the tablet goes to sleep after about a half hour of being inactive, because it's often that I have left it on and forgot to turn it off. Its slim, and it does not take up much room on my desk (which isn't that large honestly), and comfortable to hold.
I have seen an improvement in my work and I would definitely recommend in the future.
-Amazingly cheap for a wireless tablet.
It’s $69.99 on amazon.com, compared to Wacom’s $179.99 for a small Intuos Pro.
-Solid and clean design:
It utilizes the whole space of the tablet! No unnecessary extra space that makes you think “why can’t that be a part of my drawing space?” (which my Intuos tablet admittedly has, but I can get that tablets have different builds).
Instead of shortcut buttons you need to click, this tablet has touch-sensitive shortcut keys! You can customize two keys to switch between options like zoom in/out, undo/redo, or even increase/decrease brush size! I find this very handy!
Even if you customize those keys to be anything but redo/undo, the second to last touch key is automatically an undo button!
-The Pen doesn’t have an eraser at the backend.
This doesn’t bother me since I personally have never used that feature! It’s just something to note. Instead, you have to toggle the eraser using one of the pen buttons.
-Installation is straightforward!
XP-Pen is currently fixing an issue that I’ll mention in the “con” section, but the installation instructions are clear (and they provide cute illustrations!).
PROS (starting with my favorite things):
-The drawing area is BIGGER than my small Intuos Pro???
This honestly astounded me. The Star 05 is physically smaller than a small Intuos Pro, but its drawing area is significantly bigger (8x5 inches, versus Intuos’s 6.2x3.9 inches). I found myself feeling off and a little limited when drawing on the small space given by my Intuos, but I can REALLY appreciate the extra room the Star 05 provides in comparison.
-The tablet is small and lightweight!
This makes it so easy to whip out when I get an idea I need to draw. It actually encourages me to draw more when the urge comes, instead of feeling too lazy to pull a tablet out and set it up.
-Energy-saving Sleep Mode!
After 30 minutes of inactivity, the tablet will enter this mode. It’s helpful if you’re the kind of person to place your tablet down to do something else and you forget to turn it off.
-2048 pressure levels, just like the Intuos.
I can confirm that this is true! The pen pressure has worked just fine for me! This is coming from someone who struggled with a Monoprice tablet that had terrible pen pressure levels.
-Great software compatibility!
I’ve confirmed that it’s compatible with Paint Tool SAI, Adobe Photoshop CS2, Clip Studio Paint, FireAlpaca, and Krita!
-Right hand and left hand user friendly!
And it’s easy to change the settings for left-hand users!
-Installation Issue (with solution!):
Long story short, I couldn’t use the provided installation CD or the website’s Star 05 driver to properly install the tablet. However, I emailed a company representative and they troubleshooted very quickly! I instead just had to download the Star 04 driver from the website. I was also told that the company will be working to fix this for the CDs and the website driver!
-The placement of the touch keys:
When holding the tablet (I tend to hold the side), the palm of my hand can brush up against the touch keys and accidentally activate them. So I need to watch my hand placement, BUT there’s enough space above and below the keys to readjust my hand. There’s just not much space beside the keys.
-Buttons may work better than touch keys:
I either need to glance down to touch the appropriate touch key or guesstimate the location of the touch key while drawing. However, I might just be used to feeling the physical buttons and being able to count them to know which one I’m pressing.
-The Pen’s Design:
If you’re used to Wacom’s more “weighted” pen like me, the lightweight feel and simple shape of this tablet pen may feel a bit strange at first. However, it hasn’t affected my ability to draw! It’s just something I noticed at first, and I think I’m starting to get used to it.
If you’re on a budget and are in need of a new tablet, or you want to buy one as a present for someone, this tablet is a great choice! Despite the minor cons, I believe the pen pressure levels, drawing space, lightweight design, and wonderfully low price are worth trying out the Star 05!
Other than that nuance, it's pretty much as good as it gets. Also comes with one of the XP-Pen artist gloves. I would recommend this tablet for sure.
