PR by the Book sent me a copy of this book to read for review (thank you). It has been published and you can buy a copy now. You might want to get the first one so you can start this adventure at the beginning.
It begins with a car accident. One brother is just bruised, the other has broken his back. The older brother isn't going to give up, he's going to keep fighting. But the younger brother can't forgive himself. That's what makes the star take him and his friends to a bicycle rally so he meets someone who gives him encouragement and help.
From there, they end up visiting D-Day and helping their great grandfather as well as getting more advice and knowledge. They even manage to visit the major event on 9-11. There they save their aunt. I have to admit that going back and saving people from death sounds good but it can have an impact on the future they live in. It doesn't seem to in this story. I also appreciated that the boy with the legs paralyzed didn't change the life changing event that caused it. He could have. But he's beginning to understand that the events of life change you and make you grow.
The Trackers catch up with them and the story gets increasingly tense towards the end. It looks like everything ended the best way and the Trackers are gone. But they're not...
The Author Creates Age Appropriate Content. My girls have always loved fantasy/science fiction. Unfortunately, their reading levels and interest levels have led us to many non-age-appropriate books over the years. While, my 4th grader was certainly interested in reading many of the young adult, fantasy novels that my cross my desk for review--I rarely found myself able to pass it off to her after my first read through! The StarPassage series makes me happy. Readers will find minimal violence, no sexual situations or inappropriate themes. The difficult subjects addressed are done so at middle-school-age appropriate levels--and the book is written in a way to hold that middle-school-aged-attention span as well!
Expect to Follow the Series. I love a book that gives me both closure to the current storyline and enough loose threads to keep me ready for another book. I enjoyed the characters, I enjoyed the stories--and I look forward to following some of those underlying, subplots through more books!
Would I recommend Star Passage Book Two: Heroes and Martyrs? I love books that will make the kids ask questions. I love books that offer me the opportunity to follow up a reading with some additional conversation--whether it be about historical topics introduced in the text or those real-world issues present in the book that real-world kids face. This series is well written, well developed and a clean read for families with advanced reading, young middle school aged children. I think I enjoyed this book even more than the first--and I would recommend this book (and the series) to sci-fi fantasy fans--and to parents seeking to engage a child in discussion outside of the book's reading. These books are Christian based--and Faith does play a role; however, I did not find the books to be preachy or "over the top."
I received a complimentary copy of the book for use a blog review.
The second book in the Star Passage series delivers another homerun of an adventure! The premise of the story rests upon the Carsons using the star of passage to help others. The two brothers they are directed to are dealing with the painful fallout of a totally random accident. Like everyone, both brothers, Mike and Bobby, are trying to find a reason for the accident and lay blame on themselves….but their encounter with Tim and Marty and the star of passage reveals truths to them that change their entire world!
Once again, the characters travel to major points in history. The lessons learned are always timeless, but are always helpful to the life lessons that are being experienced by the travelers. Mike and Bobby become dear to the reader’s heart as the story develops, and although they experience some dangerous and exciting things as they travel, they seem to grow stronger in their faith and their relationship with one another by the end of the story.
I can’t forget one important detail…the Trackers. These displaced spirits take on a more deadly aspect in the second story of this series, and they promise to be more of a threat than ever. I’m not really looking forward to the role it seems they are headed toward in future novels. I think the complexity of the stories will only grow and develop in fantastic ways!
Clark Burbidge has created a young adult series filled with action, adventure, faith and a bit of history for good measure. This is a novel that is hard to put down! I can’t wait to see what happens next!
