The StarTech SAT32MSAT257 mSATA SSD adapter turned out to be a pretty good addition to my gear collection. It is identical to the unit sold by Micro SATA Cables so I can't be sure who actually manufactures the device. I can tell you that it does exactly what it is designed for... it allows you to install a SATA III (6Gbps) mSATA SSD for use in a standard 2.5" SATA bay and run it at full speed. What attracted me to this adapter is the "open frame" design. Anyone with any amount of experience with this type of gear should be able to agree that many mSATA drives run hot. When mSATA drives are installed in full enclosures the heat can be trapped inside the enclosure which increases the drives temp and eventually reduces its lifespan. Some enclosures have thermal pads that help transfer heat from the mSATA drives to the metal cases of the enclosures but that functionality isn't universal and isn't always as reliable as it should be. With an open frame adapter such as this one you have better options for managing heat through airflow paths or through custom heat transfer solutions depending on your setup.

Overall the unit does what it is designed to do and I believe it does it well.

A durable product that does a job well done

Recently I picked up the StarTech.com 4 Bay Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5/3.5 HDD after I upgraded from a 4 bay Mac Pro to a Macbook Pro. I wanted to maintain using my SATA drives I pulled from the Mac Pro and realized I still had several IDE drives I had collected from older Windows Based Computers.

Insert the Startech.com SATA IDE adapter.

The docking station already worked exactly I needed it to and this adapter just was an extension of how wonderful these line of products have worked for me. I should of paid more attention to the instructions, though. I thought it was something I simply slipped into the dock itself. Instead I have to manually set up each drive with the adapter. I did not see this fact as I was in a rush and using amazon on a mobile device. Attaching the adaptor only takes a few seconds but it now breaths new life into a large collection of IDE drives that are, on average, about 400GB in size.

A reviewer already mentioned that using the small screws on a drive with a screw driver is fine for one or two drives but, when you are doing a large collection, these Solid Brass CPU Case Thumbscrews, 6 Pack are a time saver as well as prevents an incredible amount of frustration. Also, make sure you set up the master/slave settings on your IDE drive.

Overall a recommended purchase. It is a durable product that has saved me hundreds of dollars by breathing new life into my older hard drives which I no longer have to replace with SATA drives for the time being.

Great for my laptop which has only a SATA 3.0gbps for mSATA drives, but a SATA 6gbps for 2.5"

I have a performance laptop from Original PC (the EON 17S), but as wonderful as it is, the mSATA port on-board is only SATA 3.0gbps. In order to take advantage of the 6.0gbps standard, you have to be using the 2.5" drive bays with your SSD. Realizing this, I decided to take my mSATA drive and convert it to a 2.5" SSD and purchased this device to do that. The device worked flawlessly, enabling me to plug my mSATA drive into the 2.5" drive bay and effectively DOUBLE the speed in which it was able to function. It basically enabled the computer to recognize the mSATA drive as a standard 2.5" SSD without any issues.

If you have a laptop with mSATA support, you may want to check what version of SATA it is capable of, and if you have the same issue as me, this device is a GREAT solution for getting the true performance out of your mSATA drive.

I had a few drives sitting around and I can now use them in the SATA docks I have. I also tested it with a Altec SATA HDD duplicator that my work has. Worked great except how slow the drives are.
I uploaded a few pics so that you might get a better idea of the setup. Hopefully that will help you decide if this unit is right for you. Swapping drives takes only about a minute but make sure you have the HDD jumpers in the correct position.

Works like a charm

This must now be only a "niche" item, since the enthusiast community, the OEM manufacturers of PCs at large and the technology have banished IDE drives to the heap of obsolescence.

As an enthusiast, I have many surplus hard disks. I am still trying to rid myself of lower-capacity IDE drives.

But I had invested some years back in a Startech IDE hot-swap drive bay-and-caddies with three Hitachi 500GB IDE spinners. Since these devices were all intended for backup, they still have "low-mileage." I estimate the total of the original outlay in 2006 nominal dollars at ~$345. I maintain a home-server running WHS-2011 (Win 2008 R2). I wanted to use these old items as part of a backup strategy for the server itself.

I tried several SATA-to-IDE devices such as this StarTech bi-directional unit, but they were older and therefore slower. The residual problem with ANY of these devices arises because the adapter(s) remain powered when you wish to "safely remove" and swap the drives-in-caddies. But it turns out that most bay-and-caddy designs provide a 12V port for a rear option fan, and the 12V fan plug is switched to the bay/caddy keyswitch. The Bi-directional (and other such) adapters are powered by a 5V connection to the computer power supply. So we were able to run a floppy-power-plug connecting the adapter with a 7805 5V voltage regulator spliced into the wiring, and we connected the ground and + wires to the 12V port on the rear of the hot-swap bay. Works like a charm, so the adapter powers down with the drive, and the IDE drive with its SATA connection through the adapter is completely "hot-swappable" as one would wish.

Wouldn't work

Couldn't get it to work on any IDE drive. I tried a couple which worked fine with a native IDE motherboard, but this thing wouldn't allow me to read the drives.
