So apparently modern motherboards come with one (not two, alas) 16550A-compatible UARTs, but since most people don't use them the port is never exposed on the back panel. Over the decades I've seen the header for them called out on boards in the manuals and on the silkscreen before, but assumed that since the breakout slot panel was never included with the board it wasn't a thing you could just... order online. Well, it turns out, you can.

Six bucks later, I have a normal serial port with absolutely none of the weird problems you get from trying to do USB-to-RS-232 translation. Works like a charm. Shows up as /dev/ttyS0 just like you'd expect. Has full hardware handshaking support. No latency issues or timing issues like you get from the vast majority of USB-serial adapters. Just plug in this barebones header/plug/bracket combination, screw it in, and do what you need to do.

I have an old APC UPS that I wanted to continue using (it has new batteries and plenty of power and then some for my setup) after upgrading the motherboard in my PC. Unfortunately, it only supports basic signaling over a standard serial connection.

Sadly, the motherboard didn't offer a serial port on the back (I don't think any do these days) but it did have a db9 serial header on the motherboard. This connector solved my problem, allowing me to easily connect the internal db9 serial header to an external db9 serial port, allowing me to connect my UPS so that I could automate power-off situation handling on my desktop.

I'm very happy that I was able to get this part to solve my particular need. I imagine that this is more of a niche part these days but I was very happy to find it!

My ASrock 990FX extreme 4 motherboard came with a 9 pin serial header. I have a radio that is programmed using a serial cable and this adapter allows me move codeplugs back and forth with my windows 8.1 rig. Essentially it does what it is supposed to do and I have had no issues. I will note for those that might care for aesthetics if you tape off the header and the 9 pin connector you can plastidip the entire assembly so it blends in if you have a darker colored rig like I do. Plastidip works great on cables (especially the ribbon variety as it is flexible.

Had to buy this because I needed a serial port. Motherboard has only the 10-pin internal socket. This unit installed in 5 minutes and gave me what I needed: Linux found the device attached to the port upon restart.

I like that the flat cable is plenty long. Should install in just about any motherboard/case combination.

ATTN newbies: always power off your system before installing a PCI or other internal card. This ain't USB.

Also, find or download your MB/system user's manual and get familiar with the BIOS setup. There's nothing hard about the physical installation of devices like this -- unless space is a problem -- but they do _not_ "just work," the motherboard has to "turn them on" at boot time and then tell the operating system (1) they exist and (2) how to communicate with them.
