Startech doesn't keep the Macintoch drivers/application up to date. They worked, most of the time, through OS X 10.11, but do not work at all on OS X 10.13 (High Sierra) -- the application launches but immediately exits. Startech also does not properly sign the application, which means that newer versions of OS X will not launch it at all without a dangerous workaround. The application was clearly a lot of work to produce -- they should keep it up to date. Their failure to do so has turned this handy $350 gadget into a paperweight overnight.

Ever been in a Datacenter and had trouble finding a crash cart? This product is for you. Works equally well on Mac or PC, this USB device will connect your laptop to a server or appliance, and let your laptop be the keyboard, mouse and monitor for said server/appliance.

The software is a bit quirky, sometimes needing a manual refresh to clear up some artifacts on the screen, and every now and then after unplugging and replugging (ie: switching to another server) you have to quit and reopen the app (just sometimes though), but there's no smaller way to get a connection than this! Highly recommended, especially for people who travel to do installs of technology gear and never know when they walk in if there will be a crash cart available for use.

Works great. I need this when i travel to customers and they dont have a KVM readily setup in their rack. This product works great. The console of the server/machine opens as a window in software on your laptop. Great to take screenshots of devices during the boot screen. And also allows you to share your desktop to someone else so they can see the boot process of the device. Works just like a iDRAC or iLO.

One thing to note: this device is the NOTECONS01 unit. There are two different units. The other version allows to copy files back and forth, which i dont need. The driver/software install is different. You will need to download the proper driver/install for this device. The driver/install does come included on a USB drive in the box, but the version was a few versions out of date.

I had the other software installed already from using a different device from a customer. It would not find my new device and was very confusing until i figured out that they were different versions and uninstalled and then installed the right installer.

I order one of these and when it arrived the pins on the VGA plug were bent. I sent it back to Amazon for a replacement and received another. This one had straight pins and I thought everything was great until I fired it up. Once it fired up I was able to see the remote PC just fine. It was a little slow when compared to the IOGEAR but hey at least it worked. The main issue was the USB keyboard and mouse kept disconneting. When it was connected the keyboard would not respond consitently at all. The input to the remote machine was a bunch of jibberish that somehwat resembled what I typed. For the $300+ you would think StarTech would have a reliable product. This thing is a dud.

I bought this because I am always going to data centers and hate looking for, or just HOPING there is, a crash cart lying around, or that the client has a KVM in the rack. This easily fits in my laptop bag, and comes with me in the truck or on an airplane. And if you get a 15 foot usb cable with it like I did, you can sit on the hot aisle instead of the cold aisle. You data center monkeys will know what I'm talking about.

But it works exactly as advertised. You see everything from POST onwards, on anything from desktops to G9 HP servers. WELL worth the cash. Feels solid built too...hefty...but I still treat it like a baby just because of how expensive it is.

Fair warning though...on Windows 8 or newer, they don't have any signed drivers yet, so you have to boot into the recovery mode and turn off driver signing in the OS, then it will load the drivers and work fine. It will continue to work until you reboot. So if you just put your laptop to sleep, it will be fine. Just keep this in mind if you think yours doesn't work on Windows 8/10. Once the drivers are loaded the first time, they never need to be reloaded again, but it won't find the device on USB until you turn off driver signing in the OS.

Other than that, this is probably the best tool in my bag.

First off let me say I love these things and have used them for several years. Working on servers is so much easier. It's not just the replacement of the screen of keyboard with the laptop that it allows, but the ability to mount an ISO image and the server can then 'see' the image as a bootable CDROM just makes life so much easier to do things.
A few things do let it down - first the physical design. The smooth case means the thing has to hang from the server and the laptop by the connection wires, there is no clip or hook to hang the weight of it from the server racking or anything else. Second, it uses a USB mini-A connection to the laptop and comes with USB-A lead. If your laptop has USB C, just try finding a long replacement lead from USB C to USB mini-A, or you'll just have to use an adapter. It would be better to have USB C, connection from the device to the laptop these days. Lastly, no case or additional connection adapters. Given the price it should at the least come with a small case to protect it. As for the adapters,# - VGA, while it is still the most common connection it isn't the only video out servers use - so you may need to add VGA to DVI adapter and a VGA to display port adapter, as well as the previously mentioned USB A to USB C, these may all be required in your kit. Oh, and the software is supplied on a USB-A memory stick. In short, could do with an update, but still great for server work.

Absolutely invaluable if you work on PC's professionally. Saves carrying (or finding) a keyboard, mouse and monitor. Turns your laptop into all three. Very handy for instance for updating BIOS settings PC in one window, settings in another. I'm just waiting for them to come up with a wireless version, although I guess that would be easier to leave at a customer site!
This is my second one so a word of caution - don't leave the USB lead plugged in while carrying around in your kit. The socket came of the board in the first one.
