Add A Variable Speed PWM-Controlled CPU Cooler To An LGA1156/1155 System

The FAN1156PWM CPU Cooler with PWM Cooling Fan for Socket LGA1156/1155 systems provides reliable and efficient cooling for compatible Intel Core i3/i5/i7 CPUs.

Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Technology

With Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technology, the fan speed can be dynamically controlled by the motherboard, so the fan runs at a speed that suits the operating conditions - lowering power consumption and fan noise when the system is idle, and delivering maximum cooling under full load conditions.

The StarTech.com Advantage

This 95mm Ever Lubricate bearing fan offers increased reliability and lifespan compared to traditional sleeve-bearing designs.

Product Features & Applications

  • Computer systems where the cooling fan does not need to run at full speed all the time, for lower power consumption and noise
  • Replace a noisy or failed CPU cooler for an LGA1156/1155 system
  • Install an energy-efficient CPU cooler for a build/upgrade for the following system CPUs
  • 4-pin Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) motherboard connector
  • 95mm Ever Lubricate Bearing fan design

My CPU was starting to overheat, and my system was starting to shut down. I've dumped a lot of money into keeping my computer upgraded and compatible with more current apps, and it has saved me thousands by preventing me from having to buy a new computer. And just when it appeared that the OEM fan that came with the chassis was changing speeds, I went ahead and chanced a purchase on this StarTech fan.

Not only did it cool off my CPU, but it actually brought down the temperature even further.

Definitely a good buy for older 478 pin systems.

Pros:
Very silent
Very small
Easy to install

Cons:
Thermal paste got separated

This fan isn't for hardcore gamers or video editors. This fan's cooling is probably only enough for the average internet browser/office work. But for what it is and the price you pay, it's absolutely fantastic. I ended up returning mine and getting the Zalman CNPS8900 because of the larger fan and better cooling power (about 10-15 C difference).

Oh and don't forget to squish the thermal past packet before you open it. I opened mine out of the box and it was separated; a few large lumps and some white watery liquid. One star off for the bad quality thermal paste.

This is an excellent product, a replacement for your old worn out Pentium heat sink. Items like these are hard to find. The one glitch I had was, this was a Dell Optiplex computer and the Dell fan connectors are non-standard, proprietary. So, when I realized the female fan connector did not match the male socket on the motherboard of this small-form-factor Dell PC, I had to search the internet for an adapter cable that would adapt a standard fan connector to the proprietary Dell motherboard socket. Once I did that, and got everything installed, the PC has been operating well without any overheating or stoppage due to thermal errors. I found the adapter cable on Amazon, too.

I used this to cool a Verizon MiFi and it works great, even without the fan. I remove the battery cover from a MiFi 4510L and used a hair band to hold the heat sink against the lithium battery. The device was being used in 115 degree heat and went from constantly resetting (and getting dangerously hot) to nearly 100% uptime and better throughput.

Style Name: TX3Size: Socket 7/370 - Copper Verified Purchase
Pros:
Easy to Use Clip, did not even need a flat headed screwdriver.

Its low profile and lightweight, this is good for tight cases, but more important for Slockets. A slocket with most of its weight towards its socket keeps it from being pulled out the slot by gravity, a large cooler, can make a slocket 370 slot 1 card come lose, and only bad things happen after that.

Cons:
The base is not machined well, lots of small scratches, will need to be lapped smooth for permanent use in a machine.
Now for its fan, it is a 60mm Fan, Half Height, and 5k-RPM Ball bearing.
The Cooler may claim its quiet but no fan that small and that fast is quiet, it produces a very annoying whine like most fans of this size do at full speed. You will need a Fan controller to slow it down to 40-60% if you want to live with a bearable noise level.

Conclusion:
This is not the worst heatsink in the world, but its not the best either.
Its not like there are very many choices now for 7/370/A.
Its just.... Okay.
Would buy again if I needed another low profile slocket cooler, or passive cooler for a low speed socket 7 chip like say a Pentium 90 or 133.

I have an extremely old amd computer and 2 of the fan blades broke on the cpu cooler. I needed a quick replacement and startech was the only one that had it. This little unit functions well, keeping the processor temperatures under control and allowing me to continue to run the old software that requires the old Operating system.

If you have an old Socket 7 or Socket 370 CPU system you will probably need one of these fans at some point in time. (Especially for Socket 7 CPUs as these did not have built-in thermal monitoring/protection features so a failed fan will cause damage)
In my case I'm replacing the fan on some old Intel Pentium 100/AMD K5 systems and this works for me. Be sure to doublecheck your old CPU fan height clearance before ordering - some motherboard/cases may have the hard drive mounted above the CPU in which case height clearance may be an issue. The height on the heatsink & fan is approx 41mm from chip to top of fan. The fan is labelled as a ball bearing fan so it should last awhile.
Heatsink & fan comes with 3-pin motherboard connector, adapter for Molex hard drive/cdrom style 4-pin connector as well as a single use pack of generic heatsink compound.

Not very effective - I had higher temps than the old dirty asus cooler that I wanted to replace. That particular cooler had a copper insert in the middle that the CPU contacted and was a better conductor of heat away from the CPU. I cleaned the old cooler fins out, reinstalled it, and stuck this one back in the box with lots of other parts I have.
