Dual 30" Displays on an 11" MacBook Air with OS X El Capitan 10.11.3

Current setup:
11" MacBook Air (Mid-2013) with 1.7GHz i7, 8GB RAM, Intel HD 5000
Mac OS X 10.11.3
2 x 30" Displays (2560x1600)

On the 11" MacBook Air, it only has one Thunderbolt port and to run 2 external 30" displays, I needed a USB video adapter. Previous to this, I was using the StarTech USB 3.0 to DisplayPort (USB32DPPRO) and the 2nd monitor would run fine, but it was a little laggy. I mostly used it to put barely used windows. So I decided to try and upgrade to this adapter and I can say that I am much much happier with this. The improvements from the previous adapter is that it's much faster refresh than before. Not quite as fast as direct, but significantly better. I would say that it is 75% as fast. In comparison, the previous adapter was 30% as fast It also shows all of the graphic transparency that the previous adapter couldn't show.

Very pleased. Here is how to make it work on a Mac.

Style: 2560 x 1600Verified Purchase

Ok, so this is how to make it work correctly on your Mac (for Mavericks at least, didn't test with Yosemite).

WARNING: seems like device won't work with Thunderbolt displays, only Mini-DisplayPort Apple Cinema LED Display-like monitors.

First thing you have to do is throw away the CD (not literally of course, but you may). Second, ignore everything other reviewers say about getting drivers from some Taiwanese company's website (no longer the case).

So, here are the easy steps:
0. Do not connect the device yet.
1. Go to DisplayLink dot com -> Support -> Mac Software -> choose the version 2.4 (IMPORTANT) --> Download --> Install --> Reboot
2. Connect the device. On the first connect, it might take up-to 30-45 secs for it to be installed and recognized by the system. That's it.

If not 2.4 version, then 2.1 because 2.2 or 2.3 will spam your Console making you the keeper of several-GB-in-size log files. If you're on those versions, to verify this bug, open your Console and connect the device and you will see it appear. The message will say something like:
_CGXGLDisplayContextForDisplayDevice: No matching context for device (0x7fbae3502cd0) - disabling OpenGL

Seems like DisplayLink guys corrected this in v.2.1, so CUDOs!

Overall, it works great so far. Sometimes, rarely though, does need to be pulled out of USB (it should be the device itself you are disconnecting, not a monitor inserted into the device) and back to reset. But not after every sleep mode, as some complained. It is quite smooth, when you use for browsing, youtube and stuff, almost like it's a Mini-DisplayPort/Thunderbolt. Not bad, huh?

The worst thing I've experienced: while connected to this device, my laptop put itself into the deep sleep due to low battery. After awakening, it was ok, but then after a few Mission Control pulls and clear Desktops (when windows fly away and hide) it cashed all my open programs (Finder, Firefox and so on). So save your work often. But I would not call it a common behavior. If you sense something is off, disconnect/connect back the USB, and all will return to normal.

Works great on my Macbook Air!!!

Works perfect on my Macbook air after installing the drives from startech.com. It comes with a cd but the cd only has MSFT drivers to install. Not to mention macbook airs don't have cd drives. I went on the website and it took about 10 minutes to install and set up. Once it was up and running I am not able to run dual monitors on my Macbook. I have one monitor connected to the thunderbolt connection and the other running through this usb 3.0 4k video card. It works great and has a very clean resolution. I was skeptical at first but I can not assure anyone that you will NOT be disappointed.

An amazing product for a very specific use case

This product is working perfectly for me. I was trying to hook up my work laptop (a Lenovo Thinkpad) to a couple of Dell monitors running at 2560x1440 resolution. But most non-Macbook Pro laptops only have one DisplayPort out, and HDMI is capped at 1920x1080. So basically, my only option was to drive one of my monitors at a much lower, non-native resolution, which looked horrible.

I bought this product and had the second monitor working at 2560x1440 literally within seconds. It even automatically set the desktop to extend onto the second monitor! There is absolutely no lag, the video doesn't go out when I'm transferring files along the same USB 3.0 bus, nothing like that. This basically would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.

If you just want to drive a second monitor for Office and Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign use, this product will work great. Just don't buy it if you're trying to do one of the following:
- Gaming
- Hardware-accelerated video rendering
- Anything 4K

This is because the Startech device is an external video card. If you're trying to play video games or render out of Cinema4D, your computer might get confused about which video card should be doing the rendering. But if you're trying to do these things, you probably have multiple DisplayPort or DVI-D outputs on your machine anyway. This device works best for adding monitors to less powerful machines with a limited number of ports.

Small With Big Capability

I followed the directions, in order, starting with download, before turning on and it gave me a 2560 x 1400 @60Hz resolution instantly, as indicated by my monitor and by the crispest looking picture I have ever seen, with computer graphics AMD A8- 7400-APU Radeon R5, 2.2GHz, 8 GB, 64 bit (sheee!) I use Snipping Tool to screen capture for saved pictures indicated on my computer as 2560 x 1400 resolution. The device is small, so looks like a part of the cable turning your USB + DP cable into just a longer DP cable, making my Display Port usable on my monitor. I have connected the HDMI from my computer to another monitor at the same time and they are identical, so I can use that computer HDMI port for another use at the same time. You might have to play with your computer Display Settings rarely; very minor and very quick come back. I'm using it now.
