My Dell XPS M1530 with Win7 x64 Locks up with this card

I have tried several things with this card. There are no problems with retention in the Express Card slot. It works for a while but when there is significant I/O such as backups, my computer locks up and I have to perform a hard shutdown. After some hard shutdowns, I have to run Windows startup repair and reboot. I know that the drive is getting plenty of power. My ANKER external 2.5" enclosure has both USB 2.0 connectors plugged into my Plugable USB 2.0 4 port USB hub. The Plugable hub has a 2.5 amp power supply and provides 500mA per port. When I tried to install the Win7 x64 driver from the device manager, it claims that the driver is for 32 bit OS. Anybody go any thoughts about this.

UPDATE:

1. Updated the Win 7 x64 driver from StartTech website but does not help.
2. Downloaded the BIOS/Firmware upgrade from Silicon Image. Flash utility does not update BIOS. And, the flash utility cannot retrieve current BIOS version.

I got this card for use in my X220 ThinkPad so that I could use internal, full-size optical drives externally, via an honest-to-goodness SATA interface. The purchase was made with some trepidation since I've never bought any StarTech products before other than SATA-Molex power dongles, but everything seems to have worked out!
The card arrives in a small box that's mostly empty space, except for the card (in an anti-static bag), an short instruction manual, and a driver CD. It slides right into the ExpressCard 54 port and while it isn't quite flush, the overhang is marginal - 1mm or less. The connectors seem to be sturdy. Installing the drivers from the included mini CD via a conventional USB 2.0 DVD-RW drive was easy enough, though the instructions in the printed manual appear to be somewhat off. Anybody who's an old hand at this kind of thing won't be fazed though, and installation via the Device Manager is quick and easy enough: just right-click on the latest device with a yellow question mark, click update drivers, and provide Windows with the path to the root of your CD drive. Once that's done, the drivers will install the card as a new storage controller - the card uses a well-known chipset by Silicon Image - and everything after that is transparent to Windows.
As for performance. I have not used the card with anything other than optical drives and don't really intend to. While in use with two different optical drives, no connections were dropped, and I was able to run a few full Opti Drive Control disc quality scans without issue. Also burnt one test disc without problems. I successfully connected two drives at once, but didn't try to use them simultaneously other than to just slide a disc in, which worked fine; I do plan on putting the controller through its paces eventually and will post back if it ever fails. But so far its been flawless in a few hours of use today.
One limitation appears to be that devices are not hot-swappable/hot-pluggable. Whatever devices you plan on using, they should be plugged in before startup. For my purposes however, this is not an issue. Overall, I'm quite satisfied, and will definitely look at StarTech products again in the future.
EDIT: Never mind about that last point. While it sometimes takes longer than you'd expect, devices plugged in after startup are eventually detected. You can force this by opening Device Manager, right-clicking on any device, and selecting 'Scan for hardware changes'.

Convenient with a few tricks to work around

The controller card is flush and very convenient. There are several tricks to sucessfully plugging in the eSata cable without popping the card out by accident.
First things first:
This card can get hot. This is highly dependent on how much data is running through the card. I have not be able to do a long term editing project on this yet so I can't fully assess the heat yet.
Odd thing:
With my Dell XPS M1530, I noticed that the lower slot is easier to plug in (the one that lines up with the longer end) and the upper slot requires you to remove the card because the metal cover seems to be obstructing the cable from being plugged in properly.

now for the trick:
you have to jiggle the cable side by side in slowly. It can take a while but once you're used to it, it'll take you something like 5 seconds.

Now for the problem:
Be careful about pulling the card out suddenly or have it suddenly have parts of the pin disconnected. It can and will cause a kernel panic and give you the blue screen. It can also mess with your internet connect. I shut down my ethernet port completely and I needed to restart my computer to get it to work again. If you also happen to have problems with your computer not being able to start windows, pull out the controller card and wait until you're logged in and the computer is settled, then plug it back in and you should be ok.

StarTech 2 port flush mount Express Card is great, but be aware of using a native port first to load a driver!!

The flush mount feature of this express card is what sets it apart, a great feature to have that saves a lot of hassle with otherwise obstructions caused by a card that hangs out. Mine worked fine the first time with the express card's driver card on my HP laptop running Win7 Professional. It has continued to work for months now. BUT...be aware that not all external hard drives can work the first time through the express card to load a driver i.e. upon first time out of the box, as others have noted in comments about hard drives that need to be plugged into a computer's "native" port i.e.the built-in eSATA or USB port in order to load up a driver the first time....I was only able to load my external drive via my laptop's native built-in eSATA port, which took only seconds to do. Then it worked fine via the express card/eSATA port after the driver loaded and the external drive was recognized.
