Expensive but worked for 10G NIC

I used this to install a mellanox connectx-3 into a x1 slot. I am getting about 5 gbps which is fast enough. The only other option was a USB NIC which I don't think would be as fast or a 2.5G x1 card (definitely slower) then I would have to run cat5e and I prefer fiber. My only gripe is the price. Almost $25 is a lot for something which is basically a x1 riser which you see below $10 all over the place. Minus one star for milking us on the price. So if you want to convert a 10G card to x1 and don't mind being ripped off on price this adapter will work.

Does not work for its intended use

I tried 2 of these Startech pcie x1 to x16 adapters with 3 different video cards and in 2 different computers running Windows 7 Home Premium and Ultimate. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers normally in Windows and in safe mode several times both with and without card+adapter inserted. Some of the video card drivers would not install when the adapter/card was not plugged in but would install ok when connected which indicates something is being recognized but I would get no video signal when starting the computers or even after waiting for windows to load. The video cards appear to get power through the adapter but no new hardware is detected in windows and nothing new is listed in device manager. I've tested both Nvidia and ATI cards and all cards work fine without the adapter.

Here's some more info about the hardware I'm using:

Cards tested:
Powercolor Radeon HD5450 512MB
EVGA Geforce 210 512MB
Zotac GT 240 1GB (just for good measure; I doubt the adapter could supply enough power for this one)

Motherboards:
Zotac 6100 ITX
Zotac 8200 mATX (also tried card/adapter combo in pciex16 slot to see if it made a difference since pciex1 card are supposed to work in them)

I also contacted Zotac to ask if anything special is required for the bios to recognize a pciex1 video card and they said no. All 3 cards work fine in the pciex16 slot of the mATX board (shows bios screens and windows loads ok even before drivers are installed). Both motherboards have the latest available bios updates.

My conclusion is that this adapter does not function for its intended use or it has an extremely high rate of defects. I have yet to see a pciex16 sound card, tv tuner, or wireless adapter so I assume the card was designed for use with graphic cards. Startech was unable to help nor did they provide any info as to what hardware and/or software is comfirmed to work with this product. I would caution anyone planning to use this that it likely won't work.

UPDATE: Judging by the new picture of this item it looks like they redesigned it but kept the same part#. The two I tried looked like the pics someone else uploaded but the main pic appears to have a new 4-pin molex connector. Perhaps others will have better luck with this revision.

I already had a graphics card, but only had PCIe 1x slot available. This adapter is exactly what I needed to use the graphics card that I had in the slot that was available.

Graphics Card:
AMD Radeon HD 6450

Motherboard:
Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3

I actually have it plugged into the x16 slot, but I need the other x1 slots active and to do that on this board the x16 slot can't be in use. So this did the trick without having to upgrade the motherboard yet. Running 4 monitors total now. 1 monitor attached to this card. Using it for productivity / web browsing. I had a 720p video running on it to test and it looked fine.

It does what you'd think: lets you put an up-to-16x low-profile PCIe card in a 1x slot. Motherboards may not deliver much power to the 1x slots. If you're installing a 16x video card without a separate power connector I think you're probably going to be over spec. I'm writing off my toy GT620 crashes to that problem. I don't know if there's a good way to supply additional power on a card like this anyway.

In a perfect world, this would ship with a tiny slot filler bracket to aid alignment. I don't think I would have paid much more for that feature.

I'm using this card in my Dell XPS 9100 to add a 2nd PCI x16 graphics card (an HIS Radeon HD 5450) to power a third monitor. I had no problems whatsoever with this adapter.

Windows 7 x64 Professional detected the new graphics card immediately and the existing ATI driver for my Radeon HD 5600 card worked just fine. Would definitely buy again as needed (although I'd certainly try and get a PC with more x16 slots next time first!)

I tried to use this to replace a video chip that did not have a driver for Win 7 64. It plugged in and the PC found the nvidia 610 video card on boot. Unfortunately I kept receiving "the video driver recovered from an error" whenever the video became saturated. I had to purchase the more expensive adapter card with the outboard power connector to make the issue go away. This does work as advertised but may not be for video applications.

Ho acquistato questo prodotto al fine di poter utilizzare una scheda di espansione silverstone usb 3.1 con pci-e x2 anche su un pci-e x1.
Infatti dopo aver montato gli m.2 samsung (che richiedono un pci-e x4) mi erano rimaste solo pci-e x1 sulla mia Asus z97-a e cercavo proprio qualcosa di simile per non dover accantonare componenti che hanno sempre funzionato bene.
Il pacco è arrivato nei tempi e ho provato subito a montarlo ma inizialmente non funzionava nel pci-e x1 mentre funzionava perfettamente in uno dei pci-e x16.
Ho avuto il sospetto che il pci-e x1 non erogasse una corrente sufficiente e ho provveduto perciò ad alimentare il Silverstone separatamente .
Inoltre , al fine di far funzionare il tutto anche su pci-e x1 ho dovuto entrare nel bios della mia Asus Z97-a e andare in Advanced/Onboard devices configuration e selezionando PCIeX1 (in PCI Express slot and M.2)
Tutto ha iniziato a funzionare e subito ho testato una sdxc per vedere le prestazioni in scrittura e lettura. In allegato ho postato gli screenshot.
Risolto il problema ho notato che l'attacco però risultava piuttosto ballerino in quanto il nuovo spessore rendeva inutilizzabile la piastra di fissaggio in metallo a cabinet e motherboard.
Con una fascetta da elettricista ho fermato il tutto anche se il bloccaggio non è ottimale.
Se come me avete bisogno di utilizzare schede pci-e x2, x4 o x16 su un piccolo pci-e x1 questo è quello state cercando. Ovviamente è una soluzione un pò ballerina e bisogna adattarsi.

Had it running about a week now. So far nothing has caught on fire, despite having a fairly beefy GPU plugged into the thing. GPUz reports that it's happily running at PCIe 4.0 (x1, of course), but since the GPU'ss workload isn't exactly IO-heavy, I've no idea how stable that is.

My only complaint is there isn't a good way to mount it to the case, but I'm not sure that would even be possible without interfering with whatever you're plugging into it.
