I tested this with two different computers with discrete graphics cards. The first was a visiontek amd 7970 with three HP L2201x monitors. Two monitors were connected via the 7970's miniDP and the third used the starTech hdmi2dp from the 7970's hdmi output. No lag or sync issues noticed with Windows 7 desktop extend or AMD's Eyefinity (playing BF3, Crysis2, Dead Island, etc). The second computer tested used a sapphire 7770 hdmi output with one HP l2201x. No issues noticed. This device was not plug and play with the HP monitors I used. I had to set the monitor properties in AMD's Engine Control Center software that I installed with the graphics cards. For a HP L2201x, choose under "My Digital Flat Panels" --> "HDTV Support" --> "Add 1080p60..". Worked fine even after reboot, but I had to first set this up with a second monitor as the main display with the starTech converter monitor attached as an extended display. I could make the starTech attached monitor the main display and disconnect the second monitor after setup. May be different for other monitors. The dimensions are about 3.3" x1.7" x 0.9". It does not come with hdmi or displayport cables, but it does come with the required power adapter. I took one star off since the device runs about 17degC/30degF over ambient, which means it is hot when touched. It is built in a metal case, so this may be by design.

I bought this to use my iMac 27" with mini DV port as a display for a first generation XBox 360 (as part of a ridiculous daisy chain of converters and cables). It works well, and is cheaper than some of its competitors. However, as using an iMac as an external display for a separate input may be one of the use cases people looking to buy this are interested in, I would like to make clear that iMacs only accept digital video input at 720p or their native resolution. You will not get 1080p with this, or any other converter, unless it upsamples the 1080p video to the native 2560x1440 resolution (for the 27"). I have not found any reasonably priced HDMI to DV converter that does this. This is an issue with the iMac's supported resolutions and not this device's fault, but you should be aware of it.

I'm using a Clevo 740su laptop running Ubuntu 15.10. It has a mini display port 1.2 and HDMI 1.3a ports. I have 3x HP ZR30W 2560x1600 monitors at home that I want to use with this laptop. I connected two monitors to the mini-display port using a Startech MSTMDP122DP, and bought this to connect the third to the HDMI port (that will happily drive my 4K panel at the office).

pros: Arrived with a 12" usb extension cable in the box - which was nice. Easy to hook up, Ubuntu recognized it right away.

cons: Ubuntu only offered 1280x800 resolution. I know this is probably unfair because Startech's site does not list 2560x1600 as a supported resolution, but this gadget is meant to be able to do 4K, and another reviewer claimed they have one doing 2560x1440 so I thought I'd take my chances. Even with manually registering a new mode with xrandr I was unable to get the monitor to switch to 2560x1600. 4 stars because Startech could have done better.

This could be an Ubuntu problem. Could be a compatibility issue with my laptop, or my monitors. Just wanted to give a heads-up to anyone else hoping to use this at 2560x1600 - it did not work for me.

I try my best not to write luck warm reviews. However it just can't be avoided in this case. I was so looking forward to this devices arrival. Once it arrived I eagerly opened the box hooked everything up to my Displayport equipped HP monitor. I first hooked up a Playstation TV devices and
great picture on monitor was spectacular and then about 10 minutes later the monitor went to sleep while the PS TV was still broadcasting a signal via HDMI(no signal detected)

I then played with the Display cable with no success. Unplugged the cable switched the ends and then a signal for about 10 minutes and then nothing. I then proceeded to try my luck with another source device. The Amazon Fire set top device. I was met with the same results. A signal for 5 +/- minutes and then nothing. I was pretty sure that I knew what was causing the issue but reserved my conclusion until I could test the device in the office with all different equipment save for the PS TV. The results were the same.

I wanted so much to like this device especially since it is the only one of it's kind that I could find on the WEB, but it was not meant to be. The problem that I have been successful in diagnosing this issue and it is definitely appears to be heat related. Although this device was not located anywhere near a heat source at my home or office once the device started to get the least bit warm, i.e. 10-15 minutes the signal will be interrupted and the LED indicator on the output side goes off. Let the unit cool for a couple of minutes and the problem goes away until the next time the unit heats up, which is a couple of minutes later.

Ultimately I ended up returning this unit after testing and trying to get it to perform over the course of a couple of days.
