I needed to use a legacy PS/2 mouse/keyboard on my new motherboard that has only one PS/2 socket. My old keyboards and mice each have their own connector. This did the job, but I had to reverse the keyboard and mouse compared to what the adapter indicates to get them to both work properly. That's no big deal.

It's a shame the motherboard makers have cheapened their product by providing a single connector to serve both keyboard and mouse. Then hou have to have a splitter like this to connect the standard devices. Some brands of keyboard/mouse splitter cables fail to connect all the pins and therefore don't work. This Startech cable is the one to get because it has all the pins connected.

As a product like this is the build looks good,but beware! I am not singling out this manufacturer alone, but all I investigated.

This type of "Y" jack design I found all have a six pin output (none having an eight pin plug). They all were retailed at prices of $1.99 to about $20. I thought $5.00 was a worthwhile amount to take a chance with, even though my new mother board has an eight pin plug.

When the item arrived it of course wouldn't work. How silly to believe an offer of a six pin adapter would work! So don't bother to take a chance.

My amazement is why are these adapters even offered if the single PS2 plugs available on desktop motherboards have eight pin connectivity. (You will see upon observation that both the PS2 mouse and keyboard have four pins each.Summing up to one plug with eight pins.)

Should anyone find a "Y" jack with an eight pin connector, I'm listening.

May be problematic for some installations

The so-called standard for combining a PS/2 mouse and keyboard into a single PS/2 connection to a computer or docking station doesn't seem to be implemented the same way by all manufacturers. The descrepency pertains to how the data and clock signals of one of the devices are re-mapped to the two nominally unused pins (2 & 6) of the single 6-pin mini-DIN connector on the computer. If this "Y" splitter cable doesn't work with the keyboard and mouse plugged into the receptacles designated for them, try swapping them, i.e., plug the mouse into the keyboard receptacle and the keyboard into the mouse receptacle. However, this technique still might not work for all installations because this particular splitter cable passes all 6 pins from the keyboard receptacle to the male plug, rather than omit the connections for pins 2 & 6 which are re-mapped for the mouse data and clock signals. So, if whatever is plugged into the keyboard receptacle has internal connections to these pins, it may conflict with the signals sent by the device plugged into the mouse receptacle and cause one or both of the devices not to work. It would have been better if Star Tech had left pins 2 & 6 of the keyboard receptacle unconnected.

This item was bought for a new mainboard which only has a combined mouse/keyboard PS2 connection. The item allows use of a wired PS2 type mouse and similar keyboard. It works properly.

I would recommend this for anyone who happens to get one of these newer-type mainboards with the single combined PS2 connector, and still wishes to retain their wired PS2 type mouse and keybaord.

none exists sure exactly what this is for but it did not work for my walk eight-year-old XP computer links set up I'm guessing the software on the motherboard couldn't read it and did not understand it I got another brand of the same type of cord links and that one didn't work either to I guess there's some things you just can't break the rules on

but seems to be a good quality build and for some reason I still have it to this day
