I recently bought an Alienware M18X gaming laptop that came equipped with a mini-Display port. I wanted to share a little information that I was able to confirm just yesterday in regards to a question that I had regarding the M18X mini-Displayport's capabilities. I was unable to find a direct answer (via Google or Dell Tech Support) regarding the exact specification version of the min-Displayport that comes with the M18X. Apparently, it is 1.2, but I am still working on verifying this information. So, you may ask why would I be worried about some stupid little port that most folks won't use anyway and what does it have to do with this adapter review? Well, if you are an avid gamer like me and aren't happy with the 60Hz 1920x1080 screen that came with the M18X and would like to be able to play games @ 120Hz in 2D mode and also @ 60Hz in 3D mode, the only option is to use an external monitor solution. Well, here's where the great news comes into play. Displayport can support full 120Hz signals and 3D @ 60Hz (whereas HDMI 1.4a can NOT). The problem is getting the video signal converted from the mini-Displayport signal into a Dual-Link (DL) DVI signal for 3D monitors that don't have a Displayport. I found a USB powered (Active) mini-Displayport to DL DVI converter on Amazon and bought it last week. It arrived this week and last night I finally got around to testing it out on the M18X. I can confirm this solution works! The converter allowed for me to connect to my Alienware AW2310 OptX 3D 120Hz monitor at 120Hz and I was also able to play games in 2D @ 120Hz and in 3D at 60Hz (had to hook up the 3D emitter to the laptop too). You will probably need to disable the Alienware laptop monitor output within the NVidia control panel before enabling the 120Hz refresh rate.Read more ›

Setting up eyefinity? Doing 60 or 120hz triple monitor gaming? THIS is the one that works and supports that. I know, it's not an approved vender from the AMD web site but it just works-unlike another "approved" adaptors and seems like a quality product with longer cables on it for easier moving the pc around to boot. No crashing, no tearing, flashing, going blank AT ALL during gaming. EVEN at 120hz. Does not "auto change" or force you to go from 120hz to 60hz like Accell does. Don't waste your time with others (i.e. Accell). I use 3 dual link cables, 2 of these adaptors and the native DVI output on the card. Easy. AMD 6990 12.1 drivers (for now) and 3 AW2310 alienware monitors.

I got this to support a QNIX QX2710 LED Evolution ll 27" 27 inch 2560x1440 Samsung PLS (LG IPS) Glossy Screen Panel PC Monitor from my Mac Mini. It works OK, but sometimes after the Mac has put the display to sleep, I get snow upon wake. The solution is to pull the USB (which powers the adapter) and reconnect. I've purchased a USB hub with switches to make this operation less annoying (Sabrent 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub with Individual Power Switches and LEDs (HB-UMLS)).

To be fair, I am using to feed into a powered StarTech KVM (StarTech.com 2 Port High Resolution USB DVI Dual Link KVM Switch with Audio). However, I haven't seen any issues with the PC side (the other side of the KVM). I haven't needed to reset the KVM - only this adapter from my Mac Mini (mid-2011).

I've seen the snow issues after switching the KVM to the Mac side and also after the Mac puts the display to sleep (with no KVM switching).

Also, while I get that this is a digital only converter - there would be no analog output to the 4 pins that surround the spade - by using a DVI-D only connector, it simply prevents the use of a DVI-I cable. So if you have a DVI-I cable, you won't be able to use it, even though it's a functional superset of the DVI-D cable.

Update: After a couple weeks of use, I have to comment on another annoying "feature". When the Mac puts the display to sleep, this converter starts running a test pattern - flashing the screen red, green, gray, etc.

This part was on AMD's Eyefinity approved list, so maybe there is a bad batch out there. My first one Startech MDP2DVIS did not work, so I exchanged for another MDP2DVIS and that one did not work either. Not sure if they are defective or incompatible. Ordered same kind of adapter by Accell and it worked immediately upon connecting. However, this Startech MDP2DVIS did not even allow my computer to detect the monitor that it is connected to.

I ordered a couple of these guys http://www.amazon.com/QNIX-QX2710-Evolution-LED-Monitor/dp/B00BUI44US a couple of months ago (from newegg). There is only one Dual Link DVI D connector and no others. My card is a Sapphire Radeon 6950 which only has one Dual Link DVI D connector. It has 2 mini DisplayPort connectors. 99% of the articles out there insisted I needed the $60 - $100 "Active" adapters to go from mini-DisplayPort to DualLink DVI D. Before spending that much I wanted to see if anything else worked. I tried some adapters that were lying around the office and one or two from Radio Shack (that I returned). Most of them "faked" the Dual Link DVI D (or I) side by accepting the connection but not actually using all of the pins. I think they do this so they can work with the widest range of DVI cables and most monitors don't "require" them all to be used. So they can get away with calling them Dual Link DVI D. Needless to say NOTHING worked. Then I stumbled across an article that mentioned these guys. With doubt and trepidation, especially because of the other negative reviews here, I bought them and was pleasantly surprised that they worked!

Note that one of the reviewers also said it worked, but complained of charging more because they call it "active". Well they sure as heck don't charge as much as the other active adapters which the cheapest I could find was $60 with bad reviews.

Another reviewer said his two machines couldn't output 2560x1600 to his 30" Dell, but he doesn't mention if either his computers or his monitor is supposed to support it.

I'm not sure how to trust a review that simply says "Didn't Work. Failed immediately".

Anyway, with my configuration this worked great.
