This cable does not implement the full "null modem" specification. Specifically Pin 1 (CD) is not tied to Pin 6 (DSR).
The cable worked flawlessly with programs that do not use (or can be set to ignore) Pin 1.
However Microsoft Activesync and Windows Mobile Device Center do not fit into this category and would not work.

Technical support was very responsive but unable to resolve this major issue.

I used this to connect to the serial console on a NetGate pfSense appliance. Should I ever accidentally lock myself out of the web administration GUI this is the only way to access it. Connected via PuTTY in a Windows 7 virtual machine in VMware Fusion on a late-2013 MacBook Pro. If it works with that setup it will likely work with anything.

This is a great cable for prototyping if your board doesn't support a TTL connection. Being able to monitor if RX and TX are both working is very useful. If you always need a null modem for your designs because that is the way the plug is wired, this saves you the annoyance of needing an extra adapter. Especially nice if you have to travel often with cables as I do.
However, if your board/device does not have a crossover you should look for a cable without a null modem built in so you don't need a null modem adapter to "cross back" to get a direct connection.
Most importantly, this uses the rock solid FTDI FT232R chip which in my experience is by far the most reliable in terms of the chip itself and drivers for modern Windows(Vista+) versions vs the common Prolific and ATEN chip-sets found in most other cables like this.

I used this serial adapter to support legacy systems. It works well under both Windows 7 and Virtual Box software. I often use Windows XP in a Virtual Box virtual machine (VM). You can attach this USB device to the VM. This allows me to run legacy software that will only work with XP and use a serial port.

Although the printed manual does not specify, there is a driver for Vista. Didn't see any for W7.

But, the Vista install went fast and perfectly. When I connected the cable to a usb port, it turned up as COM3.

This product is perfect for my high-end laptop because it does not have a DB9 serial port. But, my hobbies and my job require that I be able to connect to a serial device using DB9 connectors.

Double-click my heels!

With my new motherboard I no longer had any com ports and only USB ports. Bought the ICUSB232Pro from [...] and this USB to RS232 Serial Adapter Cable did the trick and ended all my problems. Works great in both Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional in 32 and 64 bit. Comes with drivers or just go to their web site and download their latest.

For the most part, I have been pleased with the StarTech products I have purchase. However, I continue to fight this device and it's functionality in Windows 10. With the Prolific drivers I have been able to get this working and identify the chipset as PL-2303 RA which is listed as supported on WIndows 10. Currently it is hit or miss, as to if the connected USB is correctly identified and linked to the device/driver instance. At this point, I can't tell if it's poor drivers or a counterfeit chip. Very disappointing and a frustrating waist of time and money!

I have a similar product (Null Modem USB to Serial) from StartTech with a FTDI chipset.. It has worked flawlessly. I will be investigating a standard USB to Serial adapter utilizing the FTDI chipset in hopes of having a stable product when needed.

I needed this cable to run a virtual screen for my new Uniden scanner that has a major bug in the front usb port, By using this cable on the rear GPS port, i was able to run my virtual screen with no problems at all.
