They look identical, so unless you get the proper product number from StarTech you may have a problem. We finally got the correct one with the Oxford chipset, installed it, it now showed up on my wife's computer and we were good to go. The printer works fine and all is well in the world. Crisis Averted

As someone working in the networking field, having a serial port available to you is important as it the method you use to console into your major networking equipment. As laptops have been getting thinner and lighter through the years, the somewhat bulky serial ports have been removed completely, and it is rare nowadays to find a decent laptop that comes with a native serial port built in. The most common method to obtain your COM port is to get USB-to-Serial adapters, commonly referred to as dongles. While these dongles work very well, after many uses and gradual wear and tear they start to lose their effectiveness especially if you keep removing them from and connecting them again, before eventually having to be replaced completely. I have tried the cheap dongles and the more expensive ones that can run up to $30, eventually either the dongle or the Rollover cable requires replacement. So this time around I decided to try something different and I bought this Startech Expresscard RS232 Serial Adapter.

I have to say that this product works well, and since I don't plan on removing the ExpressCard anytime soon I don't expect having to deal with the wear and tear issues I did with the dongles. This device will create a virtual COM port on your computer that will allow you to console into your networking equipment without issue. Acting more like a native serial port, I don't have to worry about the length of the wires that came from the dongles and now I have all my USB ports free for use. It really is a great product, however i have to remove one star from my rating due to some initial installation issues.

This Serial Adapter Card is not very user friendly. As another reviewer pointed out, as soon as you insert the ExpressCard into the slot, it will try to automatically install the drivers for the device. It will inevitably fail, leading you to have to manually install the driver. Much to my consternation, manually installing the drivers proved a tricky task. Neither the drivers provided on the mini disc nor the drivers provided on the website from Startech would install properly, leaving me with Code 10 "This device cannot start" errors. Rebooting the computer and re-installing the drivers did not work. Finally I ended up calling Startech support, and the only way we got the driver to work on my laptop (Dell Latitude E6420) was to install the old legacy driver.

Besides the issues with getting the driver up and running, this device works great and I highly recommend it for people looking for an more robust alternative to dongles.

Works as Advertised at a Reasonable Price

I bought this product to use with a new laptop which, like most new computers, did not come equipped with a serial port. The StarTech serial card adapter works well on my Lenovo X230T with a W7 Pro 64 bit OS and communicates properly with all my older serial devices. I wanted to give the product a 3.5 star rating but since that is not a reviewer option, I gave it the benefit of the doubt and went with 4. I would have given it 5 stars if it weren't for the following relatively minor issues:

1 - The drivers are on a 3" CD so you will need to have access to a computer that will read the smaller disk and if necessary, copy it to a USB thumb drive.

2 - Although the product is compatible with W7 32 and 64 bit operating systems, the instructions included are for XP and earlier versions of Windows. With W7, the driver disk is not plug & play and the drivers can't be installed via the W7 troubleshooter menu. It must be done using device manager and the "choose driver location" option. Be aware that the driver software installs 2 COM ports. The first is for Intel's "Active Management Technology" and the second is for the express card adapter. In the case of W7 64 bit on my X230T, it was COM 3 & COM 4. Several of my serial devices selected COM 3 automatically and would not work. COM 4 had to be selected manually for proper function.

3 - If the computer has a 54MM express card slot, the included 34MM adapter must be used. The instructions refer to a non existent diagram for installation. The adapter will clip on several ways so it may be necessary to check the computer manual for proper orientation. In the case of the Lenovo X230T, it clips on the RIGHT side facing the DB9 connector.

4 - The serial adapter sticks out almost 1.5" from the side of the computer when installed. The housing is made of thin plastic and could easily be damaged. This is especially true when a serial cable is attached. In all fairness, this issue exists on most other serial card adapters I've seen.

Please note the StarTech Express card serial adapter works well once installed and the above issues are quite minor. My comments are meant more for informational purposes rather than complaints.

I have one piece of hardware at work that just will not connect using USB serial adapters. My trusty keyspan USB serial adapter that works on just about everything else doesn't work. I've contacted the manufacture they said that I should be able to connect using an FTDI USB serial adapter. I tried one with good reviews with the same results. They were stumped and quit responding to me.

Im able to connect using an old Dell latitude with built in serial port but I would need to carry a second computer and that one runs windows XP.

I wasn't sure if it was an issue with the setup software on windows 7 or the type of serial port but I just tried this startech express card serial adapter and it works perfect with windows 7, connects without any problems.
