Matthew: Thank you for contacting StarTech.com. My name is Matt. How may I help you?
8:47 PM
Me: hello
8:47 PM
i am trinf yo get a brand new PEXUSB7LP TO WORK.
8:48 PM
iT PREVENTS MY PC FROM BOOTING.
8:48 PM
Matthew: What is the make and model of your PC?
8:48 PM
Me: the supplied drivers do not support windows 7
8:48 PM
i check youe website too.
8:48 PM
what do I do?
8:48 PM
asus z97 pro [wi-fi ac] motherboard. i7-4790k cpu
8:49 PM
I built it myself.
8:50 PM
Matthew: This card is native to the Windows 7 operating system so there are no drivers to install for it.
8:50 PM
It should automatically be recognized and installed.
8:50 PM
But you're saying that when the card is in the machine, the PC will not boot?
8:50 PM
Me: my pc only boots after I remove the card.
8:50 PM
Matthew: When trying to boot, do you have anything connected to the card?
8:51 PM
Me: no. I tried to have something connected to the internal header at first. then disconnected it. no difference.
8:51 PM
Matthew: Have you tried a different PCI Express slot?
8:52 PM
Me: I did have power connected both times.
8:52 PM
no.
8:52 PM
I have read several reviews of others experiancing the same issue. How did they solve the problem?
8:53 PM
Matthew: Can you send me a link to the reviews you've seen?
8:53 PM
Me: here are 3 reviews with same issues...( redacted)
8:54 PM
8:58 PM
so. I am not alone. What is the issue?
8:59 PM
Matthew: If the PC won't boot with the card installed, there are two main troubleshooting paths.
9:00 PM
The first is to try the card in another slot.
9:00 PM
The second option is to try the card in a second PC, it might be a compatibility issue with the motherboard or possibly one of the other devices in the PC.
9:00 PM
Testing in a second PC that is using totally different hardware than the first will allow us to rule that possibility out.
9:00 PM
Me: I am on the same PC with the card issue. I will not be able to stay online if I do this.
9:01 PM
Can you escalate my problem to tier 2/3 support?
9:01 PM
Matthew: We don't have a higher tier of support.
9:02 PM
Me: and what if it prevent my PC to boot in another pcie slot?
9:03 PM
Matthew: Then we need to test it in another PC that has different hardware to make sure it's not a compatibility issue.
9:03 PM
If it doesn't work in another PC as well it may be a defective card, but we want to do that test as if it's a compatibility issue and we replace the card, the new card will have the same issue.
9:04 PM
Me: I only have this one desktop pc.
9:04 PM
Matthew: Do you have any friends or coworkers that you can possibly borrow their PC or visit them for an hour to test the card?
9:04 PM
Me: no. I work at home alone. that is a poor idea!!!
9:05 PM
Matthew: When and where did you purchase the card?
9:05 PM
Me: Amazon.com it arrived today. I am afraid you have a high failure rate . I perceive this from many reviews I have read of yous. I went on a leap of faith. and it looks like I lost.
9:06 PM
Shall I add my opinion to it's Amazon review?
9:07 PM
Matthew: It may not be a failure rate issue. I see one of the reviews you mentioned is a z77 motherboard, and the others don't mention the PC build at all. It could be an incompatibility with ASUS z series motherboards, but at this time, we don't have enough information in our system about those motherboards.
9:08 PM
I would recommend, if you try this card in another PCI Express slot and you have the same issue, you have two options.
9:08 PM
You can return it to Amazon and see if another of the same card will work, and if it's a defective card, then a new one should fix the issue.
9:08 PM
Me: Does starteck keep reports on incompatabilities reported?
9:08 PM
Matthew: If it's an incompatibility, then a new card from Amazon will have the same issue.
9:09 PM
We do add incompatibilities to our internal system, but we cannot add incompatibilities unless they are reported.
9:09 PM
Unfortunately it doesn't sound like the above review writers contacted us about this card.
9:10 PM
Me: I resent being your beta tester. I will post part of this conversation in my review. We are done.
The card can be powered so that it will support a mouse, keyboard, USB-powered portable drive, etc., as it has an on-board fitting for an SP4 power cord. My Inspiron 580s has one unused SP4 cord, but it is too short to reach any of the expansion slots (nice work, Dell). It would have been nice if StarTech had included an SP4 extension cord in anticipation of such a problem. I installed my card unpowered rather than attempt to obtain this obscure item, and it works fine with external hard drives and optical readers that have their own power supplies, and with a self-powered USB hub plugged into one of its ports, USB-powered devices would also be supported. (Not sure why I'd want to connect a portable device to the back of a tower anyway, where the connection would be difficult to access.)
A 5-star device, but minus one star for the lack of a power cord extension at such a substantial price.
Update as of 01/27/11 - Turns out the SP4 power receptacle on this card is redundant, at least on my PC, as the PCI-e x1 connection appears to provide power to the USB ports on the card. The card can provide power to at least some USB devices that require it, as I discovered accidentally. So now it's 5 stars.
I plugged this card in and ran my desk-mounted USB hubs out of it. Computer and Windows 10 booted without a problem, and USB ports worked with no further intervention from me! No more mouse problems. No more (so far) problems with my audio interface. No more boot failures because of the USB hubs being plugged in! Best of all, it works in tandem with my onboard USB controller so I have LOTS of USB resources to work with now!
The CON. I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because on my PC case, the horizontal USB ports were partially obstructed. I was able to bend the card enough to plug in USB ports, but I wish (and probably will eventually) I had gone with a full-height card with vertical ports so this wouldn't be a problem.
