5 stars when installed in newer machines, but iffy in some older ones, possibly due to the card's VIA chipset. Test results comparing it to a different USB card with a NEC chipset follow.

This StarTech USB/VIA card worked well in both a Windows XP machine and a decent 98SE machine with adequate hardware resources. The 2 internal ports are a plus because one is a motherboard-style 9-pin header, a feature not found on all add-on cards, very handy if you have an internal USB connector cable of that type.

But, and ONLY for owners of older machines with limited hardware resources, a caveat - further testing turned up a potential problem for them.

In such cases there may be a large performance difference between this PCIUSB7/VIA card and other brands of multiport USB cards with NEC chipsets. While this card worked well in systems with adequate hardware, in two older 98SE machines with more limited resources it did not - one would not even boot up, while the other (with somewhat better hardware) did but its functions were greatly slowed - for example, a simple copy/paste of a large file on the hard drive (no USB connections) that took 30-40 seconds before this card was installed, slowed down to about 5 minutes with the card in. A partition defrag operation barely crept along, looking like it was going to take many hours to finish instead of the usual several minutes.

For comparison I substituted another brand of 5-port USB card with a NEC chipset: while this made no difference with the XP and newer 98SE machines (both ran equally well with either card), in the older 98SE machines the difference was like night and day - with the NEC chipset card both machines then booted up OK and all functions ran at normal speeds, no problems.

To confirm the rather cryptic specs for this item, it's a low-profile, PCI-e x1 USB card with 6 external ports and one internal port. It ships with useful instructions, a CD (unnecessary with Windows 7), and a regular mounting bracket as well as the low-profile bracket, so it will fit a PCI-e x1 slot on a normal tower as well as on a slim tower (e.g., my Dell Inspiron 580s - "slim"). Because the stacked USB ports span the entire width of the expansion slot opening, align the card carefully so that the USB connectors can be inserted.

The card can be powered so that it will support a mouse, keyboard, USB-powered portable drive, etc., as it has an on-board fitting for an SP4 power cord. My Inspiron 580s has one unused SP4 cord, but it is too short to reach any of the expansion slots (nice work, Dell). It would have been nice if StarTech had included an SP4 extension cord in anticipation of such a problem. I installed my card unpowered rather than attempt to obtain this obscure item, and it works fine with external hard drives and optical readers that have their own power supplies, and with a self-powered USB hub plugged into one of its ports, USB-powered devices would also be supported. (Not sure why I'd want to connect a portable device to the back of a tower anyway, where the connection would be difficult to access.)

A 5-star device, but minus one star for the lack of a power cord extension at such a substantial price.

Update as of 01/27/11 - Turns out the SP4 power receptacle on this card is redundant, at least on my PC, as the PCI-e x1 connection appears to provide power to the USB ports on the card. The card can provide power to at least some USB devices that require it, as I discovered accidentally. So now it's 5 stars.

This is the 4th USB card I bought for my computer, after 3 no go's, finally a card that just plugged in and worked on my Win 7 64 bit computer (recognized and installed by Windows system). Sometimes, the more it costs doesn't make it work at all, much less better.

I was one of the unfortunate people who bought the Startech 6-port USB card. It immediately began crashing my computer, and leaving ghost devices in my system. I eventually had to reinstall windows because of that card. I emailed the company to complain and was given an RMA for the PCI420USB. Sure, I lose 1 internal port, but I didn't really need them anyway.

The card arrived yesterday and I installed it last night. So far I've been able to plug in my Ipod without any trouble, and have a game controller running through a hub without any conflicts. This isn't a name brand, but the company did follow through, and so far I'm happy with this card.

I have an older Dell Dimension 8300 which has been a workhorse for years. Recently, none of the USB ports worked. I tried every fix software relate, no luck. Our company's IT guy suggested that the USB Controller on the Dell motherboard went south. Not good considering all my files are on the drive. I have storage backup external drives but need to connected via a USB port. I still had a few PCI (not PCI Express) slots available, it's an old computer after all, so I took a chance and ordered this Star Tech card.

Pretty much plug and play. Immediately recognized by Windows XP SP3, plugged my wireless Logitech keyboard mouse combo in, they were recognized and the rest is history. Ironically, the transfer speed from computer to external hard drives seems faster than my original system. Not bad for about $15 bucks! It's been a few months now, everything works great. so, if your USB ports go down as in all of them, chances are it's the USB Controller somewhere on your mainboard. Good luck repairing that. This drops into n empty PCI slot and that's pretty much it. You may have to check if you system uses PCI or PCI Express but that's really the only issue. If you're reading this, you probably need one, go buy it.
