Used for Garage Band. You get what you pay for...but still pretty decent

The new Macs appears to not have audio input any longer so this was my most inexpensive option. I purpose was to track bass guitar lines in Garage Band using a 1/4" to 1/8" convertor into this unit's mic input. I just got this product last night and Garage Band/Mac OS 10.6.8 detected the convertor right away and asked me if I wanted to use it for input/output. That plugNplay aspect was definitely the good part. The bass response I got excellent and it picked up the low-end but I will say that it did pick up some line noise along with it. For the amount of money I spent as well as this independent project level expectations, I can live with that.

There might be some way to fix this issue but I was experiencing latency when tracking and would have to always shift align the recorded track to the reference track properly. Monitoring worked decently if you use the converters headphone out instead of the computer's jack.

Overall, worth the price but be aware of the possible issues. If anything, it helped me get unblocked on the music project!

The StarTech USB 2.0 Audio Adapter runs so well and easily on a Windows PC we have, that I would have thought it was an iMac!

We run a small firm providing services to law firms in our community, and bought a cheap, refurbished computer to attach to a copy machine/scanner in our annex office (to act a scan repository). Thought that to be nice to the employee doing the production work, we'd plug in speakers and let them run music. Plugged in speakers and much to our surprise, found that while there was a speaker jack, there was no audio card!

I did a bit of research and found that I could buy a Creative Labs interface for $30-40, but didn't need audiophile quality. I hadn't even heard of StarTech before, but based on other reviews on Amazon and elsewhere, concluded "How bad could it be?" Two days later (we've got Amazon Prime, so got it fast even without the $25 minimum), the interface arrived, and did not disappoint. We're running XP Pro on the computer in question and the documentation, while scant, clearly said that no additional software was required for the install...i.e., it's the mythical "Plug and Play." (Note: there is a software disc for other OS, I guess)

Indeed, as promised, plugged it in and it played! Thank you StarTech and Amazon. Wish all of life was this easy and dependable.

The adapter itself is too big to fit into a USB port without blocking access to another, but they realized this and included a small USB extension cord, which is convenient & completely solves the problem. I'm running Vista, and upon plugging the device in, it was recognized automatically without the need for any manual driver installation. The reports from other reviews about it being rather loud are true, but I noticed no distortion and was able to get it to a perfectly reasonable level. I had no issues with audio latency either. Recommended.

You have to turn everything down as low as you can. Drives 600 ohm headphones to normal levels, but will still go as loud as you can stand. No drivers required on my Win 7 system.

Bought this because it was a cheaper alternative to getting the busted headphone jack of my laptop fixed. Effective and works well, however it seems to amp the volume quite a bit when you plug your headphones in; even with the computer's main volume turned down to it's absolute lowest level, the volume through the USB is still incredibly loud...painfully loud. I have to make sure I'm playing music and videos through programs that have an additional volume control to lower the volume to a bearable level. Otherwise, pretty good product so far.
