In the past I have had good luck with StarTech products so I didn't hesitate to order the SATA HDD Enclosure as it would fit my needs perfectly. Upon opening the unit to install the SATA Hard Drive I noticed the connector was cocked at an angle. That should have been the first warning that QC was not up to snuff. I was able to install my SATA drive and power on the unit. I went to move the unit slightly and the power shut off. Thinking I may have accidentally touched the power button I powered the unit back on then gently moved the unit being careful to keep my fingers away from the power button, the unit gain lost power. Obviously there is a bad connection somewhere in the unit causing it to lose power with the slightest movement. Yes, I did check to make sure the power connector was seated properly. The unit is going back to Amazon.

I had a lot of trouble getting it to work. The unit would not recognize the hard drive. Finally I got it to work but I wasn't sure what steps it actually took to get it to work so I tried some experiments with another drive. I already created a user account in the built-in server (default IP address = 192.168.2.1). It has a built-in dhcp server which you will need to connect to wirelessly. Using a drive that was preformatted using NTFS I plugged in the power adapter and turned it on. The lights began to blink and then the HDD and Wifi lights were green but the the power light was blinking red. I left it like that for a while but it didn't change and when using a web browser to log into the built-in server but no drive was recognized as being installed. I then turned the enclosure off, waited a few seconds and turned it back on. In a little bit the power, HDD and Wifi lights were all green and the drive was there. I then formatted the drive on another computer with an ext4 partition on a Linux computer and put it back in the enclosure. After turning it on and connecting to the server wirelessly, it then informed me under the System Settings - Status section that the drive was unformatted. I then went to the Maintenance section and formatted the drive. After it got done formatting and installing software onto the drive I could then access it. I could not format the drive when it was preformatted with an NTFS partition.

Second experiment: After I got things working I tried to again configure a drive, this time with it attached to a router using the supplied ethernet cable. I first re-formatted the drive and put it back into the enclosure and connected it to the ethernet cable and turned on the power.

When I bought this one, I paid like 30 bucks. For this price, it is OK. Overall quality isn't great, but it works. Its processor is way less powerful than the usual ARM found in most home NAS, and it's reflected in the very poor software (and the even worse support). If you pay the same or less than me, and don't mind some nuisances, it is fine. Otherwise go for something with a solid brand behind.

Very poor software without practical use. You can not configure for integration with the existing network. I do not recommend this product.

The only mode that worked was the USB. Being an experienced IT professional, I got frustrated to hook this device to my network and eventually gave up trying.
