Anyway, this little gadget does the trick! It splits out the audio output from the audio input beautifully and once again gives us 2 different jacks serving different functions to plug in our various audio devices. This is NOT an audio output splitter or y-adapter. You would not plug in 2 headphone into this. Instead, it once again gives us a plug for a microphone and a second plug for a headphone. I was a little worried that this StarTech adapter would not allow stereo sound, but it does. Very nice! It's a great product!
Just FYI, I've done this with my system. After plugging the StarTech jack in, I plugged an 3.5mm stereo audio y-adapter into the headphone jack to split the audio output so that I could plug my stereo system and my headphones into the iMac and hear sound from both. It works great! There is a little picture of a microphone on one of the StarTech jacks, and a little picture of headphones on the other jack. It's a little hard to see since it's all the same color, black, but that's fine. I then plugged in the microphone jack from my headset into the StarTech microphone jack. Once you have all the connections plugged in you may need to re-boot or re-start your computer so that the "smart plug" notices that there is now a microphone attached and allows sound to be inputed into the iMac and the mic to work. Also, just in case you are new to the iMac like me, it seems the the iMac's built in mic continues to function even if headphones are plugged into the headphone jack.
So I initially bought the Turtle Beach adapter which was ludicrously overpriced and they wanted almost the same amount to ship it. Think I paid $18 in all to Turtle Beach to get their part almost 10 days later. And there part failed in about a year. So now I have this part. Prime hot it to me on a Sunday and it was under $8 I think. It was actually less cause I had some amazon rewards Visa points I used toward the purchase.
So far, part is working good on the headset with my son's PC.
I am probably being unfair and rating my overall Amazon experience vs Turtle Beach experience. However, the buying experience is part of it and figured it was worth sharing.
This thing works - at least for me! I needed it to be able to work with my iPhone 5c, my Klipsch Image S4i earphones, and my RØDE VideoMic Go. At first, it didn't work, and I was ready to return it. However, I figured out why it wasn't working right as I was searching around for an alternative. I came across the RØDE SC6 Breakout Box, and I watched a video about it to see if it would do what I need it to do. During the video, I was told to make sure "Playthrough" was turned on under the "Input" settings in the RØDE Rec app. I immediately paused the video and turned on "Playthrough." Bingo! The splitter works for exactly what I need it for. And it works very well at that. There is no loss in audio quality or recording quality that I can hear, which is a huge plus. (Now, it won't work with Apple's Voice Memo's app, but that's fine with me, since I don't use that app at all.)
Bottom line: This microphone and headphone splitter does exactly what I need it to!
Pros:
-Audio quality is consistent
-Works with a lapel mic and a battery powered shotgun mic
-Works on both androids I have tried it on
Cons:
-Won't work with just the mic - it requires a set of headphones to be plugged in
-A little fiddly to get set up
-Some devices don't read it consistently
-Longevity concerns
Conclusion: I wanted to use my old mobile phones as a digital audio recorder with an external mic. This adapter allows me to do that. At first it was a little fiddly to get set up (since is absolutely requires a pair of headphones to be plugged in and does not work with the headphones with a built in mic) but once I got going it works just fine. Since I didn't need a headset plugged in I cut the cord off of an old set of headphones so I could just have the end plugged into the adapter and that seems to work. I'm a little concerned that the build quality - it feels a little bit cheap - but if there's any issues with that I will update at a later time.
