Turns A 3.5mm Combo Headphone/Microphone Port Into Two Distinct Ports

The MUYHSMFF Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack splitter (4-position 3.5mm to dual 3-position 3.5mm) is a headset Splitter Adapter featuring one 3.5mm Male (TRRS) and two 3.5mm (TRS) Female connectors, enabling you to add a mono microphone input, as well as a stereo output to your PC or Laptop, through a single 3.5mm audio port. It can turn the combo port into two distinct ports – one 3.5mm headphone jack and one 3.5mm microphone port.

Innovative Audio Ports

While some laptops from Apple and Dell feature only a single (4-position) 3.5mm audio port to support both audio input and output, this innovative headset splitter adapter breaks the audio port out into two distinct ports - one that can be used for a microphone input connection, and the other for connecting external (output) speakers.

Compact And Sturdy Design

The headset splitter features a compact and sturdy design to deliver the perfect solution for applications that require portability, and takes up very little space in your laptop bag. This adapter is not a headphone splitter/Y-cable. It cannot be used to split the audio output to two separate sets of headphones or speakers. Some laptops and mobile devices will not work with all external microphones. This is typically caused by an impedance mismatch between the microphone and the device, due to hardware incompatibility - it is not a limitation of the MUYHSMFF adapter. To ensure proper hardware detection, we recommend that the external headset be plugged into the adapter first, before the adapter is connected to the computer or mobile device.

Product Features And Applications

  • Allows the use of an external microphone and speakers with PCs or Laptops that are equipped with a combo 4-position/4-pin audio port
  • Compact design for maximum portability - a great solution to have on hand in your laptop bag
  • Lightweight, yet sturdy design that can easily be plugged in when required.

Extremely misleading -- had to cut and resolder it
This adapter is very misleading, since the microphone side works only on some devices. What is wrong is that not all of the wires from the "three ring" male side are connected to the two female sides. This adapter is supposed to be what's called a "TRRS to TRS/TRS" adapter. The TRRS refers to the "three ring" male side, where you see four metal bands: T for tip, R for ring, R for another ring, and S for sleeve. Most companies have the TRRS metal bands used for LRMG, meaning L for left headphone channel, R for right headphone channel, M for microphone, and G for ground. Apple, of course, is LRGM, switching the mic and ground just so you have to buy their special adapter which costs more -- yes they are that cynical.Anyway, this adapter does not connect on of the MG lines to the microphone. Some devices will tolerate this and compensate, depending on how its connected (e.g., the ground may be connected elsewhere). But for many, it just means that the microphone side will not work at all, or that it may have terrible quality. That's the root of most of the 1 star reviews on here -- the "it does not work" variety.I had this problem and had to order a different one from a different company. But I was in a huge hurry, so I ended up having to cut this StarTech one apart and solder a new wire in for the MG. I attached a couple pictures for anyone who also has this problem, doesn't mind soldering, and is in too much of a hurry to wait for a new one to be delivered.Suffice it to say, StarTech is being extremely misleading by not mentioning this in the advertising. Now I can't trust them and will not be buying any more StarTech products.

I got the new 2013 iMac to replace my monster of a Windows rig that I built 6 years ago. Figured I'd try out a Mac. I knew it would force a lot of upgrades and replacements of peripherals, but I did not know that the new iMacs use the "smart plug" 3.5mm audio jack that combines the audio output (headphones) and input (mic) into one, single jack. This made my Windows style headset useless, but more than that it made my audio system setup inoperable. I have my computer connected to my 5.1 surround sound stereo system, both for output listening to iTunes and other audio as well as input from other devices connected to the stereo for recording. I needed a solution that would undo Apple's "bright idea" of combining all audio functions into one plug. I can understand such decisions when space is a premium such as laptops, notebooks, cell phones, and tablets... but a 27" desktop iMac computer??? Really?

Anyway, this little gadget does the trick! It splits out the audio output from the audio input beautifully and once again gives us 2 different jacks serving different functions to plug in our various audio devices. This is NOT an audio output splitter or y-adapter. You would not plug in 2 headphone into this. Instead, it once again gives us a plug for a microphone and a second plug for a headphone. I was a little worried that this StarTech adapter would not allow stereo sound, but it does. Very nice! It's a great product!

Just FYI, I've done this with my system. After plugging the StarTech jack in, I plugged an 3.5mm stereo audio y-adapter into the headphone jack to split the audio output so that I could plug my stereo system and my headphones into the iMac and hear sound from both. It works great! There is a little picture of a microphone on one of the StarTech jacks, and a little picture of headphones on the other jack. It's a little hard to see since it's all the same color, black, but that's fine. I then plugged in the microphone jack from my headset into the StarTech microphone jack. Once you have all the connections plugged in you may need to re-boot or re-start your computer so that the "smart plug" notices that there is now a microphone attached and allows sound to be inputed into the iMac and the mic to work. Also, just in case you are new to the iMac like me, it seems the the iMac's built in mic continues to function even if headphones are plugged into the headphone jack.

I bought this to replace the official Turtle Beach 4 pole to two 3 pole adapter my son needed for his chat headset. My son bought a Turtle Beach chat headset that said it worked on Xbox One and PC. Well, it only has one 4 pole connector. So if you didn't have a newer xbox one controller with the headphone style jack, which we don't, your outta luck on xbox. And on PC you needed the splitter I am reviewing. So out of the box, this headset did not work on anything in my house.
So I initially bought the Turtle Beach adapter which was ludicrously overpriced and they wanted almost the same amount to ship it. Think I paid $18 in all to Turtle Beach to get their part almost 10 days later. And there part failed in about a year. So now I have this part. Prime hot it to me on a Sunday and it was under $8 I think. It was actually less cause I had some amazon rewards Visa points I used toward the purchase.
So far, part is working good on the headset with my son's PC.
I am probably being unfair and rating my overall Amazon experience vs Turtle Beach experience. However, the buying experience is part of it and figured it was worth sharing.

I'm reviewing this as a new product, so I'll try to remember to come back at a later date to review it once I've used it for a fair amount of time. Anyway, on to my review.

This thing works - at least for me! I needed it to be able to work with my iPhone 5c, my Klipsch Image S4i earphones, and my RØDE VideoMic Go. At first, it didn't work, and I was ready to return it. However, I figured out why it wasn't working right as I was searching around for an alternative. I came across the RØDE SC6 Breakout Box, and I watched a video about it to see if it would do what I need it to do. During the video, I was told to make sure "Playthrough" was turned on under the "Input" settings in the RØDE Rec app. I immediately paused the video and turned on "Playthrough." Bingo! The splitter works for exactly what I need it for. And it works very well at that. There is no loss in audio quality or recording quality that I can hear, which is a huge plus. (Now, it won't work with Apple's Voice Memo's app, but that's fine with me, since I don't use that app at all.)

Bottom line: This microphone and headphone splitter does exactly what I need it to!

Rating: 3.5/5

Pros:
-Audio quality is consistent
-Works with a lapel mic and a battery powered shotgun mic
-Works on both androids I have tried it on

Cons:
-Won't work with just the mic - it requires a set of headphones to be plugged in
-A little fiddly to get set up
-Some devices don't read it consistently
-Longevity concerns

Conclusion: I wanted to use my old mobile phones as a digital audio recorder with an external mic. This adapter allows me to do that. At first it was a little fiddly to get set up (since is absolutely requires a pair of headphones to be plugged in and does not work with the headphones with a built in mic) but once I got going it works just fine. Since I didn't need a headset plugged in I cut the cord off of an old set of headphones so I could just have the end plugged into the adapter and that seems to work. I'm a little concerned that the build quality - it feels a little bit cheap - but if there's any issues with that I will update at a later time.
