I personally have not experienced any of the problems expressed in the negative reviews on this product. I purchased two of these units back in August 2011, and have been using them for 6 months. I have them both attached to separate USB 3.0 ports on my Dell XPS 17 laptop, and they work perfectly.

This unit also works with USB 2.0 ports (though USB 3.0 is much faster, of course).

BIG CAVEAT: I need to say that I don't really swap hard drives much in these docking stations. I have swapped hard drives several times, and it's gone without a hitch, but that's not my normal usage pattern. I am using these StarTech USB 3.0 docking stations to provide my laptop with huge external storage, and I don't swap the drives as a general rule. The drives just sit in the docking station and hum along, doing their thing with great transfer speeds. I know that other reviewers have noted odd behavior when swapping drives. I haven't seen that odd behavior myself, but I also don't swap often. If you are going to be swapping drives frequently, you might see some problems, I can't say. I just haven't observed any of these problems myself.

I have been using these docking stations essentially constantly for the past 6 months. They have run for weeks at a time with nary a hiccup.

I have not seen the problems reported by another reviewer that when reading or writing to one drive in the docking station, it interferes with the speed of transfers of another drive in the docking station. I have been using these drives very heavily, copying huge numbers of files at a time from one drive to another within the docking station, simultaneously editing or playing back other files on one or more of the drives, and it all works smooth as silk.

If you are only going to use the USB port, go buy model number SATDOCK4U3 instead of SATDOCK4U3E

Here's why:

This one, if you turn any of the 4 drives on or off, it unmounts ALL of them.

I contacted their tech support, and apparently this is intended due to the way it was designed. But the USB only versions don't do this. So if you're not going to use an eSata cable, do yourself a favor and buy the USB only version.

Although I have not used this particular StarTech USB 3.0 SATA docking station for 2 hard drives, I have been using its big brother, the same product for 4 SATA hard drives (StarTech.com SATDOCK4U3E 4 Bay eSATA USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5/3.5 HDD). I purchased two of those 4-bay StarTech units back in August 2011, and have been using them for 6 months. I have them both attached to separate USB 3.0 ports on my Dell XPS 17 laptop, and they work perfectly. So, even though I have been using the big brother of this product, I thought it might be useful to someone for me to pass along my experience with it, because I would imagine that using this 2-bay version of the product is essentially identical.

This unit also works with USB 2.0 ports (though USB 3.0 is much faster, of course).

I have swapped hard drives several times, and it's gone without a hitch, but that's not my normal usage pattern. The drives just sit in the docking station and hum along, doing their thing with great transfer speeds. If you are going to be swapping drives frequently, I can't say one way or the other if you'll run into problems. I just haven't observed any such problems myself, and the product is designed to handle seamless hard disk swapping without having to turn off your computer or anything.

The product works perfectly fine with no issues. I plugged two hard drives (Samsung & WD) into it and both were recognized immediately.
On USB 2, my backup used to take about 30-32 minutes and now with this one, it takes only about 7 minutes.
I'm getting sequential read/write throughput as 125/90 MB/s for drives connected through this docking station.

Initially the StarTech.com 4 bay dock did not work!

The dock would disconnect... I would have to COMPLETELY cut power (switch going to power supply, not front/top switch on tower case) to my computer to get the drives to reappear. The dock was unstable and would disconnect.

I hate it when some reviewers stop at the first problem and write negative reviews.

The fix for me was installing ASMedia Driver version 1.14.8.0 in Windows 7 Professional 64. I did this manually (but YOU don't have to, read on).

I also discovered that my "Windows Update" was not configured to retrieve any hardware drivers(I just installed Windows 7 Pro 64, with service pack 1 and this is Off by default).

Google "Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware".

If you feel that this review was helpful (or may be useful to others), please rate it so it will sort to the top....
