The book is well-written and detailed which speaks directly to the authors background and research. She does a masterful job in blending military science, science fiction, adventure and intrigue into an action-packed, fast moving and exciting read. I am on to Number 2. I recommend without reservation.
I enjoyed reading about the Regiment and it's operators. There were detailed accounts of how operations likely happen, only this time with the aid of sci-fi drugs that alter physiology and physics as we know them. In addition, you see also the depravity of drug lords and the seedy underworld of the narco-trafficing in South America. There were plenty of twists and turns throughout the book.
The author writes about her characters well enough that you have a good idea of what they think and feel. The characterizations are solid and detailed. Yet, none of them are completely predictable, nor are they black and white. The good guys have some flaws, and sadly, some of the bad guys have a little bit of character. You are put right in the middle of the story and find yourself pulling for the characters to come through well.
A thoroughly solid, believable story about what might happen if someone gets hold of just the right drug, but for the wrong reasons. The fictional characters and their governments are left trying to sort out the mess. An inexpensive book by an indie author that is certainly worth more than the kindle price. An excellent read.
The antagonists in this story are anti-(enter anything new), you know the type. As some people with more money then sense get riled up by the anti fires, things get hot.
Hard to say more without giving to much away, just let me say that i recommend it :-)
Great story line - read all four books back to back so was able to really grasp the characters development - only down side is the start of every new chapter would get a bit wordy in setting the scene - other than that its a great fast read...
Because of a youthful accident, Lock Harford is a man with unique skills, and as such, he's attracted the attention of British intelligence. Now, the advent of a drug called Starbirth has endowed others with similar skills. Harford and his team are tasked with finding, and stopping, the flow of Starbirth into the world's population.
Author J.M. Johnson has created a believable, frightening world of the not-so-distant future. This book is thrilling from start to finish, and, having read the next couple of installments, I know for a fact you'll want to read more. Exciting read, 5 STARS!
The book was written by a British writer so it is culturally British. As an American, I liked having this slightly different perspective from the normal books that I read which are culturally American.
Being a writer of action, adventure, boundary breaking novels myself, I am amazed that a woman was able to write this book with such detailed descriptions of special forces operational thinking, procedure and tactics.
After reading Part One, I did purchase Part Two and am currently reading the third book in the series on my Kindle.
Thanks for such a good read J. M.!
