Product Description

Forty years of coffee-roasting expertise inspired us to perfect Starbucks® Blonde Roast - a lighter, gentler take on the Starbucks Roast. Roasting this blend of specially chosen Latin American beans for a shorter time allows the delicate nuances of soft, cocoa and lightly toasted nuts to blossom. Flavorful without being overly bold, this coffee brews a delightfully gracious cup that's perfect for welcoming friends or greeting a new day.

Call me a wimp, but this is the first Starbucks coffee I can drink straight without adding an ounce of chocolate powder. It is smooth, mellow, and after about 6 cups on a foggy day at the computer, your teeth are not grinding and you are not shouting at everybody in the house. Since I am now single (might still be married if I had drank this) I think it is great. My former wife like really strong coffee, one cup and thats it - I like to drink it all day long. With this I can drink all day and when I walk to the gym, police no longer watch me and I no longer stand in the street and shout at drivers who irritate me. Love it, and it does not taste like it was burned (I think most Starbucks is too strong and over roasted). For mellow, this is it.

My previous favorite Starbucks coffee was Pikes Place however I felt it started getting smokey tasting over time. I discovered a fantastic coffee while traveling called Lavazza Tierra. I found that most American coffees are roasted too long and at too high heat which produces burnt, bitter and smokey tasting coffees so I was hooked on Lavazza Tierra until I tried Starbucks Veranda. IMO, Veranda is very similar to Lavazza Tierra and maybe even better...the beans are milk chocolate in color and not oily which means a less bitter, less acidic cup of coffee. I have tried Veranda in my Keurig machine using a Perfect Pod EZ-cup (spring modified to fit 11g of coffee) and the Aeropress. The Aeropress makes the best cup of coffee compared to Keurig machine, drip makers and espresso machines. Aeropress and the EZ-cup require a finer grind similar to espresso grind and Aeropress requires more coffee per cup but if you want to try a great cup of coffee, try Veranda in an Aeropress and you will not be disappointed.

I'm rating this coffee 4 stars simply because I am not a coffee aficionado and therefore assume that better coffees exist. That said, this is (to my palate) the best coffee I have ever had. Let me just qualify that by saying that I like a mild coffee with little to no bitterness and a subtle flavor. Done right, this coffee (I add whole milk) is not bitter and will leave just a hint of nuttiness as an aftertaste. Unfortunately for me, that "done right" cup of Starbucks Veranda Blend is hard to come by, even from Starbucks' own baristas . If I'm lucky, I'll get one perfect cup out of every ten I buy. Why do I keep buying with such a weak success record? Because when I get that one-in-ten done just right cup of coffee, man is my day made! I have begun to try to get a better success rate for that "done right" Veranda Blend taste by brewing it myself. It is turning out to be a bit more difficult than expected. The pursuit of the perfect cup of coffee continues. At least with Veranda Blend, I know I'm on the right track!

This light roast is very sweet-flavored, not very bitter and there is a note of "woodiness". It is not burnt-tasting or heavy-bodied and it even can stand up to milk and sugar, though I really think it is best drunk black.

If you do not like that typical burnt flavor or the thick body of dark roasts, such as French Roast or Sumatra dark roast, you may well enjoy this blend. It is definitely a blonde. For those who like donut-shop blends, this is rather similar but I find it a bit less acid. And it has none of the burnt flavor for which dark roast is criticized. Really, if you like Dunkin' Donuts style coffee or restaurant coffee, you will enjoy this.

But ultimately, this did not do it for me. Firstly, the woodiness is just too pronounced to get past. And, I don't generally like light roasts, though I do like medium roasts, and in fact, I prefer medium roasts to dark roasts. However, if you've never liked much of Starbucks coffee and find it burnt-tasting, this will be a pleasant surprise.

It feels wrong to enjoy this blend as much as I do. It's really the only Starbucks blend my husband and I enjoy (though I'm not sure he realizes it's Starbucks...). It's light and crisp -- almost a bit fruity. The beans aren't oily, so they're not sticking in my burr -- which is good. Yes, you can still taste a bit of the burnt flavor that Starbucks is rather known for -- but it's so light that you wonder if it doesn't somehow add to the flavor profile in a positive way haha. Anyway, the slightly burnt flavor is the reason this blend gets a 4 star rating. I'd love to follow their recommendations and drink this on a veranda after dinner -- too bad I live in a garden-level apartment. The window into the *aromatic* garage will have to suffice.
