I bought a new set of Starrett trammel points to replace a set I gave to a co-worker. I used to be a layout man in a fabricating shop in the 1970's where I used trammel points to some amazing things taught to me by some old craftsmen from Europe. This was before modern, electronic laser measuring tools. One old man told me that trammel points were a critical tool in building the great cathedrals of Europe in the 14th-16 centuries. Once you know how to use them, you can quickly, accurately and productively layout almost anything without having to know trigonometry.
The trammel points I received were built to the same high quality standard as the ones I used in the 1970's. They are a solid, well made precision piece of equipment that are as accurate as your eyes.
In response to another review, yes, these trammel points will accept a standard #2 pencil with no modification. And the points themselves are high quality steel tapered eccentrically so you can make fine adjustments by simply loosening the nut and twisting the point in the holder. I would say you get about a +- 3/32" either way by just twisting the point in the holder. Now that's a quality, well thought out tool!
I've attached a picture showing the pencil in the holder as well as a tapered point where the top side is flat and the point tapers towards the bottom.
These are more expensive that many others you can get. But like they say, "you get what you pay for". These are accurate , quality tools that you'll have for a lifetime unless you lose them.

Starrett 59A 2 Trammel Heads With 2 Small Divider Points
The No. 59 Series is very useful for laying out and scribing circles beyond the capacity of ordinary dividers. The trammel heads have a clamping device that firmly holds various attachments. The attachments consist of two sizes of caliper legs, 6", 9-1/2" (150, 238mm), two sizes of divider points 6", 9" (150, 225mm) which are eccentric for close settings, and a set of four ball points with holder. The ball points with 6" (150mm) holder are for scribing circles from the center of any hole.

Does not fit a pencil or any other standard implement!

These are beautiful looking!!! HOWEVER, you can NOT fit a pencil or pen in these small openings. I even went to Blick Art supply in search of a thin enough writing implement to fit and I found nothing. I was able to fit a X-Acto “Gripster” like another comment on here suggested (only if you disassemble and remove the plastic grip), but I really needed both functions of being able to cut AND draw. I really wanted to love these, but I couldn’t justify without this very basic function! Additionally, one of the heads had excess paint buildup which looked like a dollop and extended down the side. For nearly $130, this should have never gotten past quality check. The anchor points are also tapered to justify to one side of rods. This is meant to fine tune any offset, however isn’t that the point of having accurate equipment to begin with? There is no etched line on either the main unit or rods to align precisely as a default preset. Personally, I don’t want to have to play with the offsets every time to get a perfect reading. I’m my option they should just be centered to begin with, assuming the writing or cutting implement your using is too. My complaints are with the manufacturer. The retailer provided fast shipping and overall great service.

and lock the shaft in place. Then tighten up the blade holder section at a right angle to the trammel line. Makes for excellent marquetry setups, luthier pieces and other detailed work.
