I owned the previous Starrett version of the protractor, and while an excellent product, it was not dead accurate. The angular marks on the dial were engraved on a decal which, unfortunately, was not applied with precision. The angular marks on this tool, however, are applied by laser and are dead nuts on. This tool will save you time, material (i.e., money) and , most importantly, aggravation. It is a very cool tool with roof pitch info and a crown molding table. All index marks on this tool are applied with a laser. The reason I give it a 4 of 5 is, unlike its predecessor, it does not come with a leather carrying case (must buy it as an accessory). If I could give it 4 1/2 stars, I would. Otherwise this tool is a thing of beauty.

I just got this item today. I paid some 90 bucks for it and it is a decal version and the decals are off. I am adding pictures to go along with. I will contact Starrett in the AM they are closed now at 8PM est. But both the protractor and the Miter Cut are off. About a degree on Miter and 2 Degrees on protractor. I placed it flat along its edge to check both Miter and Protractor to a piece of CNC Machining Granite. It is not what I have come to Expect from Starrett as my Father and great uncles are Machinist's and they have long trusted the name and I recognized them and bought this. If you are using this for Stud or Rafter work its fine over 12 feet. But not for Crown or anything precision.

This is an excellent tool that has many features. It is heavy and well-made, and the movement of the legs is smooth but retains the angle well. It is nice that the dial face and outer scale are etched- not a plastic decal. The scale is spot-on and accurate. This is an essential layout tool for contractors and those homeowners who have competent carpentry skills.

The Starrett CP505A-12 ProSite Protractor is a great step-up over the original. The improved version includes the angle/miter-cut reader that made the first one so popular, along with some added features. What's new is a table on the back that gives the user an easy reference for setting compound miter angles for any wall configuration. On a recently completed crown moulding job with various angled walls, the compound miter table did all of the math; that feature alone makes it worth the price. In addition there is a protractor and roof pitch scale on the back. I would highly recommend this protractor to anyone who regularly deals with angles in their work.

I bought this after reading all the favorable reviews, but my experience was quite different. The tool is a full degree off just from one side of the scale to the other. That is, one part of the scale reads 90 while another part of the same scale reads 89. Is it laser engraved? I can't say, but it certainly is not precision. If you are buying brand, this tool in no way resembles the quality machinists tools produced by Starrett in the past. I did email Starrett, but sadly got no response. Amazon has been great, they promptly exchanged the item for a replacement. The new one is just as bad, so I gave up.

A good tool that's solid, useful, and works as advertised. I would note that the description shown on Amazon is not entirely accurate, at least regarding the tool I received. As some other reviewers have noted the markings are not laser engraved on the aluminum but rather printed on a heavy plastic decal bonded to the tool. As long as it stays in place it should be fine. Also, the tool is not machined as stated. It's actually made from precision die-cast aluminum with no exposed surface showing any sign of machining (I'm a retired tool and die maker). The only thing that would qualify as machining might be at the pivot point, which is not exposed so I can't be sure. Not really a problem, but considering these two points the tool does seem to be priced a little high in my estimation, even with the Starrett name. A more modest price would have netted a 5 star rating from me.

I recently purchased and just received the Starrett CP505A-12 protractor. I heard poor reviews (online and from coworkers) about the less expensive models (505A-12 & 505A-7) regarding accuracy (mainly that they weren't accurate due to the gauge decals being out of alignment from the factory). I spent extra for the CP version because it has good reviews and is claimed to be laser etched/engraved. Looking at the gauges it appears that, although maybe engraved, they're still simply decals stuck onto the aluminum body, unless the aluminum underneath the decal is engraved, but I'm not going to peel back the decal and ruin the $85 tool just to find out. I guess my point is that I feel a little disappointed after paying a premium and then finding that it appears the metal is not engraved, just the decal, which could peel or become misaligned. Are my concerns warranted? I probably wouldn't have bought it if only the decals were etched and not the body itself. Otherwise, it appears to be well built and the graduations do line up.

The quality of this protractor could be improved easily. Here are the issues that caused me to return it.

1) The compound miter chart for cutting crown molding is simply an applied sticker. It was also off center and crooked which should not be the case on any "precision" tool. This sticker also acts as a washer between the two legs of the protractor which feels cheap. I can only see the bare aluminum of the tool body gradually wearing this handy chart off like sandpaper over time. It's not good engineering and it's not a detail that will stand time. The sticker on the inside of the other leg however is inset in a recess. Too bad. They were 1/2 way to a decent product.

2) The two legs where they meet at the dial were actually stepped off from each other about 1/64" strong on mine. It felt like poor quality/bad machining in the hand.

3) the dials(front and back) are in fact adhesive backed metal tag decals and not etched directly on the bare tool metal which is really dissapointing at the price. They're the same thing that you find as a model number plates on the motors of less expensive tools that don't receive riveted on tags. You know the ones. So the folks that said that the dial faces were stickers, were right in a sense but if you run your finger tip lightly over the decals you can feel that the decals were in fact laser etched as promised and not printed. The decals are inset into recesses which means they will likely hold up fine but get some acetone on there and all bets are off. Again, not built to last. At least the precision seemed pretty good on the front face dial.

4) the rear face dial has an inaccurate red plastic pos needle that is hard to read 1 degree at a time. Terrible.

5) Price.
