Product Description

Product Description

The Starrett S264WB set includes seven center punches with a square shank, and 1/16", 5/64", 3/32", 1/8", 5/32", 3/16", and 1/4" diameter tapered points. The set comes with a round red plastic case for storage. Each punch has a tempered steel shank for strength and a hardened steel point for wear resistance. The shanks are knurled for grip and have a square shape to prevent them from rolling when placed on a work surface.

Center punches make small dimple marks in a workpiece to help guide a drill bit. Manual center punches have a metal shank with a point and are typically tapped with a ball-peen hammer to mark the material. Automatic center punches have an internal spring mechanism that enables them to mark the material without using a hammer, leaving one hand free for steadying the work.

The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company, founded in 1880, is headquartered in Athol, MA.

This is a nice set of center punches from one of the big names in the business. I recommend a set like this to any metal or wood worker, if only to have backup punches if one gets dull. The case is attractive plastic and keeps the punches clean and rust free, and the knurled sides provide a good grip. They haven't let me down yet!

I can think of two other things that I put in the same category as these exquisitely machined set of tools: a Sykes Pickavant set of autobody dollies I purchased around 30 years ago (made in England), and a 7803 Dura-Ace triple crankset manufactured by Shimano in Japan (machined totally out of billet and forged aluminum and polished to a mirror finish). Quite simply the objects were works of art, something you were reluctant to put to their intended use.

Well Starrett is a big name in machine tools, so I imagine they pulled out all stops looking for a machine shop that met their standards! I presume these are still made in the USA. I see "USA" on the plain white label but it doesn't say specifically where these are made.

Price is a little steep but this is the nicest looking center punch set I have ever seen. They should be displayed in a case as a work of art, Im scared to hammer on them. Joking aside, I am sure they will take many years of abuse. Also, I would like to note that the drive punch set comes with ROUND and knurled handles and this center punch set comes with SQUARE and knurled handles. The knurling is top notch on both sets. Kind of a cool set with them side by side. The handles also shorten as they become smaller so they are all proportional to the task at hand. I would definitely recommend this set over any competitor.

I have read that some Starrett stuff is being made offshore now, but regardless, these punches are excellent, and look and feel like quality instruments. The square shape of them means they won't be rolling off onto the floor too. A little pricey, but well worth it. And it's not like you are spending 100s of dollars here - I got mine for less than 60.

Just a thought, I purchased these items in 1971, the first year of my apprenticeship. I still have the original set intact and they still work great. Mine are in a round wood box. You will not go wrong, if you take care of your tools, buying Starrett.

This is by far the best quality tools I have. I think they can outlive my grand grand son's son. Really heavy and precise. A must for anyone willing to drill thru metal and wood.

Each one was made perfectly my only gripe is that I had to e-mail Starrett to verify that they were made in the USA before I bought them.
