Starrett makes professional tools. This set is no exception. The set now comes in a sturdy plastic box, which should be fine in normal shop use. I suspect the only wood-boxed set to be found would be old stock in some store. Although the wood box would be nice, Starrett is noted for its tools, not boxes. Amazon SHOULD update the listing. However, if you want tools, this is a FIVE star set.

Then you've found them. These little 4" punches are great for gunsmithing. This is the only set I found that is tapered from the handle towards the punch.

I've been a machine builder for many years in the automotive industry. Of all the different brands of hand tools at my disposal Starrett is by far the best. They are also one of the most expensive to purchase, initially. In the long run they more than pay for themselves due to the higher quality that is manufactured into them.

As for this set of punches, it is the usual Starrett quality I've come to expect. I needed a set for some gunsmithing and I got a great deal on them during Amazon's cyber Monday special. Used for their intended purpose this set should last me the rest of my life.

The name Starrett has always been synonymous with the highest quality precision tools. Used and appreciated by machinists, tool & die makers as well as gunsmiths, hobbyists and industry for over a century, one look at Starrett tools will impress you! I am ordering this set to use in a tool box I call my GOOD BOX! The one I keep locked while relying on the tools inside to ultimately protect my life. This set of Starret punches is my second and will be used solely for maintaining my Firearms! The first set is being used for the repair and maintenance of my jet aircraft.
Since you're shopping for punches you've probably noticed that this set looks exactly like some being sold by 'High End' gunsmith supply shops under their private labels. Yes they are made by Starrett! However in my pricing comparisons I'm happy to report that the Starrett branded as well as the private labeled (made by Starrett) have Amazon with the LOWEST PRICE! Combine that with the free shipping and this is an excellent value! The finest quality, materials and price? YOU BET! So, why are you still reading not ordering this right now?
Read the other 5 STAR REVIEW! It says pretty much what I've said here. QUALITY! It's too bad the 1 Star Reviewer didn't take time rate the tools themselves rather than just comparing the old style wooden case (discontinued) to the plastic case currently used.

Ok - these are expensive pin punches - no doubt about it. There are many, much more reasonably priced options out there, and I have tried them. None compare to the quality you get from the Starrett set. These pin punches are the real deal, extremely well built and tough as nails. Just feeling them, you can tell they will out last you and can take on the most difficult of jobs. If you need a variety of pin punch sizes and work often with pin punches on a variety of items, the investment in these is well worth it - you will not be disappointed and they will last a lifetime.

Punches are akin to drill bits or sockets. Crappy quality stress bearing tools litter your tool boxes. I bought these for ocassional gunsmithing and hesitated about spending 40+ dollars on a tool I may use once or twice a year. Now that I have these punches, they are absolutely stunning! Tapered heads, size designations are lasered, not printed, knurled grips and sweeping tapered shanks...these punches look better than my Ed Brown 1911. Sure, you can find punches crafted by a master katana maker with steel folded 1000 times, but that's a P.T Barnum quip. The bottom line is that if you appreciate seriously well made tools, dissapointment will not occur upon receipt of these punches.

Not a Happy Camper

I purchased these punches for use on firearms. The first punch I attemped to use was the 1/16" to drive a small roll pin of like diameter, using a small brass and nylon hammer I started tapping the pin out when the shaft on the punch started to bend.
One of two things come to mind as a fault. 1) the punch was not tempered properly or 2) The shaft of the punch is way too long for such a small diameter drift punch.
Remedy: Try a different brand of a higher quality.I nthought I had done just that. Please note that at $50.00 these do not fall within the :
"Cheap ass tool department"

A little pricey but sometimes you get what you pay for and these punches for me are hands-down the best I've ever used (& I use punches daily). There are more expensive one out there, but the quality & fit and organized cup holder make these the best (again to me). As one reviewer wrote earlier, practically any punch that you use at an angle and a lot of force simultaneously can break or bend; but no problems to date with that but it could happen. NOTE; you can save your old punches, cut or grind them down to about a 1/4" or 1/8" stub; this makes a great starter punch and that reduces the risk of bending your better punches when driving out stuck pins.
