I want to start with the last piece - which referes to Capt Jocelyn's creepy, but inspired, captivating and utterly moving skills st the very BEGINNING of the book. Obviously Chic was right to put it at the end as I am sure his intent was not to start everything off creepy. But here's the thing that excites me: when I first read the book years before Chic's work on it, I immediately had it come to mind that this haunting, creepy piano of Jocelyn had its perfect representation in Ian Umderwood's piano intro to Frank Zappa's live debut of "Little House I Used To Live In"
And I was eager to see what interpretation Chic would have - and to my astonishment, his is so SIMILAR to Undewood's that amy closer of a resemblance might have brought copyright issues into the mix! And this is a GOODthing because it confirms that that creepy solo from Zappa's masterpiece, and its song title, have just uncanny interpretability to this story, To The Stars as also a perfect sound track for it! Chic's "space portal" interludes also have no better parallel than the effects similar that Zappa has made with such ambiance. I think what comes into play - and WHY - is Zappa also has some extremely intimate awareness of space travel, and Little House ... really speaks of nothing short of what To The Stars relates - my two cents. Chic brought it all back home!!

If you like Chick, you'll like this recording. Not a Ron L. Hubbard fan, but I do like this music around his writings.

...about a Chick Corea Elektric Band recording: Too many notes. There is so little space in this music that I find it a fatiguing listen. The musicianship is astoundng, as usual. The recording quality is excellent. Most of the charts aren't bad at all either. But, it seems to me that these guys went one step, and only one step, too far along the virtuosity scale. It seems that they are just barely staying out of one another's way.
I'm normally a huge fan of the Elektric Band. In this case, I'd have to recommend one of their other recordings, particularly the stellar "Eye of the Beholder" over this one.

Where to begin... I apologize, but I think it was a mistake to make an L. Ron Hubbard novel the inspiration and setting for this recording. Plus, do you think people on a space cruiser would be listening to salsa music? I think The Orb or something else would be more appropriate. The quintet is hot as always, though I noticed some overdubs (bass and sax, to name a couple). Gayle Moran (Corea) was also keyboardist on Mahavishnu's _Visions of the Emerald Beyond_ (1975). I believe her voice is on that one as well. For praise, I can only say that whatever CCEB chooses to do cannot fail. I just got through listening to it and enjoyed it, though I skipped the track that was all acoustic. Patitucci's tone is awesome, though Yamaha still can't beat Ken Smith. I was glad to hear some real electric piano from Chick. Weckl is a drumming automaton. Thank God for Gambale and Marienthal. Overall, I'd say the band was uninspired, especially if they had to reach for a Hubbard sci-fi novel to get stoked. Actually, I have visions of Corea's sheet music in front of each of them. IMO, the early '80's King Crimson rocks the pee out of this CD.

The music is jazzy and good

i really dont know if i was expecting to much or if im just being fussy, but this cd "to the stars" just does not do it for me. i have all of the electric and acoustic bands cd's not to mention all of drummer dave weckl's cd's and lot's of various chick corea cd's and of them all this is my least favorite. the music is just to frenetic and all over the place. it lacks the resonance of "eye of the beholder" or the dramatics of "inside out", probably the two best electric band cd's. sure these guys are all virtuosos and they fulfill that agreement by jamming every song with as many notes as possible, but that doesnt a great jazz (fusion) song make. sometimes "less is more" and that saying probably wasnt even a consideration on this release. i did give this cd many chances, but almost every time i had it playing, half way thru i was ready to turn it off. that spacey sound theme thing chick was going for just kind of annoys after a while. i will say this about the guy though, he is definately one of the most creative musicians i have ever seen. he is always trying new things, some great, some like this project not so great. maybe the next project will be better. but hopefully no more scientology space jazz. l ron hubbard books make really lousy movies and it appears music cds as well.

ABURRIDO Y PRESUNTUOSO
