Slight spoilers ahead:
I get that this is a work of fiction and that with some fiction there is a bit of suspended belief/reality. I can accept that. I've read books where I really enjoyed that fact very much. However, it just seems absurd to me that these two people lived next door to each other for many years even attended the same schools and yet he does not recognize her once he meets her at college. I get that people change; new clothes, hair, make up but seriously did she change that much? There is a scene with him and his mother where she mentions the girl next door and he doesn't really know who she is talking about. How does that happen?
While I will most likely give Ms. Verdants other work a chance; this book did not work for me in anyway.
STARS: Kicks us off in the Prologue (One Year Ago) where Parker shamefully sets her clock alarm for 10.00pm to coincide with Grayson arriving home at 10.15pm after a game where she spies on him hidden in the shadows.
Spoken in dual POV's (Parker Elliot & Grayson Waters)
He's the unobtainable star quarterback next door, crushed on by the "Plain Jane" wallflower, nerd next door, for years she's observed him through her bedroom window, obsessed over him, watched him from the shadows of her house next door. He doesn't know she exists..
"He changed my life.
With a smile, a flick of his wrist and a death-defying stunt.
He was six and I was five.
And now, thirteen years later, I am hopelessly in love.
There is only a slight problem.
He doesn’t know I exist.
He’s the star quarterback.
I’m a science nerd who hides in the shadows.
I don’t need anyone to tell me that college won't change anything.
I know he’s the star of this story.
And I belong in the audience."
As soon as I read the Prologue this story has had me in its grip ever since, I love books like this, the shy nerdy girl stalking the hot boy around campus.
The story comes full circle when Parker is given a job at Lucky's a bar run by Grayson's best friend, not only that but his estranged brother is also a bar tender there, things are going to start getting good.
The tables are slightly turned when it's Grayson chasing Parker, the girl in his class, the girl he thinks about, the girl who doesn't fall at his feet.
I can not believe that this is this authors first novel, to say that I loved it was an understatement, the writing was flawless, strong leading characters, unique story line that had me captivated from the first page, the nerdy stalker girl vs the hot star quarterback had me falling in love with their blossoming romance, Greyson's alpha caveman tendencies and Parker's quirkiness made for an enjoyable read..
Definitely an author I'll be stalking..
This is a great read and I would recommend it. I look forward to reading the other books in this series.
Brilliant debut novel for this author, I loved it and didn’t want it to end!
Parker Elliot has been in love with her next door neighbor Grayson Waters, star football player, since she was just a kid. Gray has no idea she even exists and when she tries to introduce herself at the age of 8 Gray tells her to go away, and she has. For 10 years Parker watches Grayson from a distance and he’s the only thing that’s really made her smile since her mother’s death. Now, she’s 18 and has just moved to the same college as Grayson. Parker is shy and makes the decision to change this now that she’s away at college, she gets a job as a waitress at a local bar and purchases herself a makeover. She winds up having a class with Grayson and he quickly notices Parker and decides that she must be his. Though Parker is still super shy around Grayson he begins to coax her out of herself but Grayson has no idea that Parker is his next door neighbor and Parker keeping it from him could destroy them. Add in Grayson’s long lost brother and their father who can’t manage to keep himself out of trouble and it makes for a great read!
I think my favorite part of this book, though heart breaking, was the unexpected twist towards the end that you don’t see coming – just have your tissues prepared. Also, my favorite superhero is Spiderman and I love the references in the book, they’re hilarious. This is one of those books that will have you smiling almost the entire time you’re reading, I can’t say enough how much I enjoyed it. It’s definitely a well-earned 5 stars and I can’t wait to read Malorie Verdant’s next novel!
