Oh man, do I feel old. I ADORE early Magnolia Pearl pieces, like the ones presented in Ms. Brown's first book. I could happily move into the life pictured in those images, gleefully wearing all that gloriously aged and tattered velvet and laces!
I knew that her style was evolving, like anyone else who follows her work.
While it is good to see someone grow and develop, I much prefer her older esthetic of velvet and lace, gypsy and romance personified. Thought that this picture book might reveal some reason for the massive shift in color, texture, and style.
This book presents a tepid, much muted, sloppy, cheap-looking cousin to the older look, at least IMO. [Cripes that sounds snarky...sorry.] I just don't need to see/buy clothing like this to be able to make and wear it if I want. All I need to do is drag out my old painting clothes and rags. [That sounds worse...ugh]
Listen, hats off to her for following her muse.
But this book does not move me at all, and for me, was a waste of money...but as a companion to the first book, it does add to my design book collection. I take her first book down from the shelf and read through it all of the time. Won't be reading this one again.
But perhaps I am simply an old fart, stuck in the glorious, colorful, wacky gypsy world of the 1970s. Ah well.
