We all knew that the Lone Ranger (or whoever the hero was) would survive until the next weekly segment. In this third segment of Saffron Bryant's newest series, I came very close to thinking she was going off-the-tracks. We have an assassin who has demonstrated many times so far that she never questions the assignments she's given and has incredible skills. Among these is a cold analytical view that all life ends and returns to it's most basic form so, what difference does the timing really make. She also feels she owes more than her life to the Guild who gives her assignments to her. They have trained her since she was a child and her powers of observation, stealth, patience, hearing, pain tolerance, strength, endurance and much more are almost super-human. She can blend in with her surroundings and remain so still she seems to disappear.
Her targeted Hit is the captain of the Starship she and her fellow uniquely skilled companions are traveling on. This crew has previously rescued the Captain's presumed long lost and dead younger sister. She was taken by the Imperium and subjected to experiments to enhance her abilities. She compelled her sister, and her crew to rescue many others who were also being abused in a similar enhancement program.
The crew has been on-the-run from the Imperium who has apparently subverted the formerly independent Guild to do their dirty work. They have given this assassin member of our heroine captain's crew the assignment of killing her. We kind of know the captain (Heroine) must survive but, no one has ever survived this assassin once she's on the hunt. The most amazing thing (to me) is that none of the near-miss escapes are implausible or made me think, "Really"?
I hate "cliff-hanger" endings but, this entire book felt like constant cliff-hangers. I'm fine with that as long as they're not used as a tactic to compel the reader to buy the next book. Saffron doesn't need to do that. Her stories are so good you just have to know what happens next.
