To my knowledge, we never knew each other until yesterday when I chased her down on Facebook after reading a press release in the Coushatta Citizen. Strangely, Myra and I graduated five years apart from the same tiny high school, were both honor students (she was valedictorian, I was salutatorian), both moved away and found some degree of personal success after some really hard knocks, and both share the mark of a determined woman: a space between our front teeth!
Myra Manyweather's new book, START WHERE YOU ARE, is the story of the power of a teacher, the divine hand of God, and a girl who took Dr. Seuss's words to heart:
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...”
Myra tells an amazing story centered around her own life and military career. Her story is one of service--not just in uniform, but how to serve others and help them find their talent within. Her work signals a challenge to each of us to find the best way and community to embrace and engage.
