Thomas Friedman Interviews Reid Hoffman and Ben Casnocha

Thomas L. Friedman is a New York Times foreign affairs columnist, three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, and author of international best seller Hot, Flat, and Crowded.

Whatever you may be thinking when you apply for a job today, you can be sure your prospective employer is thinking this: Can this person add value every hour, every day--more than a worker in India, a robot, or a computer could? Can he or she help my company adapt by not only doing the job today but also reinventing the job for tomorrow? And can he or she adapt with all the change, so my company can adapt and export more into the fastest-growing global markets? In today's hyper-connected world, more and more companies cannot and will not hire people who don't fulfill those criteria. This is precisely why LinkedIn's founder, Reid Garrett Hoffman, one of the premier starter-uppers in Silicon Valley--besides cofounding LinkedIn, he is on the board of Zynga, was an early investor in Facebook, and sits on the board of Mozilla--has written The Start-up of You, coauthored with Ben Casnocha. Its subtitle could easily be: "Hey, recent graduates! Hey, thirty-five-year-old midcareer professional! Here's how you can build your career today." Here is our brief chat about their book.

Tom: You're a serial entrepreneur and venture capitalist. Why did you feel the need to offer this message?

Reid: As you write in That Used to Be Us, our country faces enormous challenges. The path to the American Dream has changed. We wanted to focus on what individual professionals can do to survive and thrive in a flat world. The premise of the book is that all of us are entrepreneurs of our own lives. We must act as CEO of our careers, take control of our professional future, and become globally competitive.

Tom: Really? Anyone can be an entrepreneur? Really? Even me?

Reid: Not only can anyone be an entrepreneur, but they must be. Even you, Tom! Not everyone should start companies, but everyone must be the entrepreneur of his or her own life. The skills people need to manage their careers are akin to the skills of entrepreneurs when they start and grow companies. For example, entrepreneurs can both be persistent on a plan and flexible when conditions change. They take intelligent risk. They build networks of allies and tap those networks for intelligence on what's happening in the world. Silicon Valley's most innovative entrepreneurs possess unique skills--you can learn them and apply them, no matter your profession.

Tom: Who is the target audience for this book?

Reid: Jeff Bezos says that at Amazon.com "it's always day one." This is a book for people just starting out, and it's equally for people midflight in their career who need to reinvent, restart, or reimagine their career as if it were day one, as if they were in permanent beta. We think that's most people, and eventually everyone.

Tom: What does it mean to be in "permanent beta?"

Reid and Ben: Technology companies sometimes keep the "beta" label on software for a time after the official launch to stress that the product is not finished, so much as ready for the next batch of improvements. For entrepreneurs, finished is an F-word. Great companies are always evolving. Finished ought to be an F-word for all of us. We are all works in progress. Each day presents an opportunity to learn more, do more, be more, grow more in our lives and careers. You will need to adapt and evolve forever--that's permanent beta.

Tom: Why the urgency of The Start-up of You?

Reid and Ben: A billboard that once ran along the 101 highway in Silicon Valley summed it up pithily: "A million people can do your job. What makes you so special?" We wanted to give people tools to take control of their lives, without having to wait around for the government or a company to rescue them.

Tom: Is China going to eat America's lunch?

Reid and Ben: National competitiveness is really a reflection of the individual competitiveness of its citizens. The question for each American is, "Is a professional in China going to eat your lunch?" Some will be competitive, and some will not. And the distinction is not set in stone. Just look at Detroit. All of us need to have a plan for investing in ourselves every day.

Even as someone who has committed to an academic biomedical path for the foreseeable future, who you might not expect to be within the book's intended audience, I found the material in this book to be quite useful. It is strongest in discussing how to develop mutually enriching relationships and how to tap into the resources of your network to help achieve your goals. This is unsurprising because Reid started one of the most robust online social networks, and Ben, as evidenced by his blog and connections, is a networking maven. So, I'd recommend it especially to people who want to improve in these areas. I'd also recommend it to people who are somewhat skeptical that networking matters, because this book might very well help convince you that it does.

Here are a few of the other particularly interesting themes:

1) In part of one chapter they discuss the idea of an internal review, wherein you tally up your hard assets (e.g., cash, holdings) as well as your soft assets (e.g., skills, experiences, and connections). For the soft assets, this involves the use of a sort of "Bayesian evidence", which means that you must not only consider the evidence that you are strong in an area but also the evidence that you are weak in it. Now, just like a company doesn't tell its competitors what its weak points are, you probably wouldn't want to tell a potential employer that you are weak in an area. But, it is useful to be honest with yourself about your relative strengths and weaknesses, because it can help you allocate your personal investments in more optimal ways. This is a topic in which their "think of your career like an entrepreneur thinks of his/her company" analogy has tremendous power.

2) The book devotes some time to arguing against the idea that you have a true self with one true passion, which you need to devote time and energy to "discovering". In reality we all have many selves, many possible selves, many possible passions, and many possible routes to achieve our aspirations. Ben and Reid tap into this framework in their explanation of the "almost ready, aim, fire, aim, fire" career strategy. They discuss how the most useful way to learn whether you like something is not to think about it but to simply try it, in as low cost of a way as possible. This reminded me of both Charlie Hoehn's "Recession Proof Graduate" and Cal Newport's "Career Craftsman Manifesto." The strategy espoused in this book relates to both of those strategies in a complementary way.

3) One thing that you will notice when reading the book is that it often references LinkedIn. (Just to be clear, this isn't *all* that common--using the wonderful Kindle search application and filtering out the times where Reid is discussing his own career, I count 24 such instances.) Some might see this as "propaganda", but I actually liked it and found it useful. There is a trade-off between being giving abstract advice, which could potentially be relevant for decades but is more difficult to know how to implement, and giving actionable advice, which has a shorter shelf-life but is easier to know how to employ. Much of the advice in this book is on the abstract side, but the references to LinkedIn (as well as to other contemporary tools like Twitter and Facebook) help ground the book's advice in today's real world.

Another great book on the power of networking. It is co-authored by the creator of Linkedin, which has surprisingly to many, been around for a lot longer that new comers like Facebook. The book is primarily aimed at those people on the career treadmill looking to make a change, however the information provided is certainly applicable to anyone.

This book addresses 'networking' as something you give before you receive. It demonstrates how cultivating a wide and diverse network is what will not only support you through all phases of your career but also provide you that elusive opportunity that you never though would be attainable. The books shows you how to go about building and utilizing a network in an intelligent manner rather than merely collecting 'friends'. Most importantly, it demonstrates that you need to not only nurture and build this network but you also need to contribute back to it if you plan to benefit.

Too many people and businesses scoff at the concept of 'effective' networking. They view it the old world thinking of 'schmoozing'. Nothing could be further from the truth in today's terms. Tools such as Linkedin and Facebook make the whole networking process so much easier but to be effective you still need to create a system to gain the most advantage. That is what this book will show you.

The book is easy to read and very enjoyable. It provides practical examples of effective networking as well as action point for you to take away and implement. There is little doubt that if you take this book to heart and implement even some of the suggestions it contains your chances or networking success are far greater. Take a leaf from the book of these authors who really know their subject and start implementing one of the most powerful success opportunities you have available today - business networking.

This book was truly motivating. Mr. Hoffman did an amazing job in motivating fellow entrepreneurs and ambitious people. What was great was that he broke up the book into different segments and really focused in on the point he was driving home in each segment. Needless to say, I felt his biggest push was on networking. He emphasized this greatly throughout the book but especially in the chapters that discussed networking. He didn't fail to stress the importance of networking and speaking with other people constantly to bounce ideas and information. I have to say that after I read the book I started to utilize LinkedIn (his baby) a lot more than I have done in the past. I am very happy that I have done so.

Of course, another central role in the book was to take charge of your career and to CREATE opportunities. The author keeps us into it with different examples of different success stories that have followed these leads and principals. It definitely helped me and I'm sure others, to open their eyes and work harder and seize more in my career. In addition, he taught me how to focus sharply while still being flexible for necessary change. He brings examples at how today's business environment is very different that the previous generations and how we need to be ready for it more than ever.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to achieve greater heights in business or any other personal project. It is a very easy and enjoyable read and I think that everybody would be able to gain something valuable from it.

5.0 out of 5 stars llegó en buen estado
Reviewed in Mexico on October 14, 2022
