In my years of cooking, I've often daydreamed of the sorts of things I would tell people about cooking if they wanted to learn. It's as if Callum stole all my thoughts and turned them into this book - I've never seen a book quite like this before. Literally the only difference is that I would recommend carnaroli risotto rice, whilst he prefers arborio - that's the ONLY thing... amazing!
Callum explains everything any 'starter' needs to know, without going into too much detail. He has a very unassuming style, which is surprisingly rare in cookery books. Normally I skip straight to the recipes in cookery books, but I actually wanted to read the introduction to this - it's interesting, helpful, and really entertaining. He's balanced it perfectly - descriptive without being waffly; very funny without going off on a tangent; causal without being unprofessional. He explains everything from cost-saving tips, how to buy your food, what you need and don't need. And of course, the recipes are fantastic.
By the way, for those in the UK, don't worry about this being an Australian book - other than the occasional mention of Australia (which just adds to its charm really) all the quantities etc. are exactly how we use them here. No cups or sticks of butter!
If you don't have a clue how to cook, and you buy and read this book cover to cover, you will feed yourself well forever without having to look at another book.
I can't recommend this book more highly - just buy it!
