About the Author

Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Barbie Bohrman dreamed of becoming an author. Long after she had given up, a book club’s prologue contest enticed her to give it one more go. What emerged were the beginnings of her debut novel, Promise Me. Now she’s living her dream and writing stories that entice readers to escape and break away from reality. When she’s not writing, you can find her trying to get through the books on her Kindle (more than a thousand at last count) or watching Lost or Seinfeld. She currently resides in New Jersey with her two children.

Starting Over is the third Barbie Bohrman book I’ve read and it’s safe to say I’m a fan. Barbie knows how to write lovable characters, great family dynamics and fun, yet heartwarming stories. Playing it Safe is by far my favorite of hers. I’m not sure if anyone could top Julia and Alex. But guess what- you get some Julia and Alex in this story. It’s Vanessa’s book, and Vanessa is Alex’s older sister.

I remember Vanessa and Josie fondly from Playing it Safe. I loved them both and their dynamic as a mother daughter duo. It’s been just Josie and Vanessa for so long, Vanessa doesn’t remember any other way. Josie always comes first.

When Vanessa meets Josie’s science teacher, she is instantly attracted and having feelings and thinking things she hasn’t felt or thought in a long time. Josie is totally on board with her dating. Especially if it’s Mr. Cameron Thomas. Vanessa wants to try, but she still has her reservations. Cameron is understanding and patient with her, but at the same time knows when to say something and when to push.

Just as Vanessa starts to realize starting over might be okay, something (or someone) re-enters her life and shakes everything right of her axis.

Starting Over is a tale of just that- Vanessa starting her life over. I found this story sweet, heartwarming and lovable. I do wish that we got more scenes with this couple. I wanted more Cameron and Vanessa scenes!I like how much Barbie’s books focus on family, and this family is fantastic. Overall, I enjoyed this one. 4 stars!

I'm the voice of the minority here, but I seriously hated this book. Oh, not at first. The first few pages were really promising. Great writing, in fact. But nothing happened. There was a lot of pretty writing, but the characters weren't doing anything. So I hung in there. The main character, Vanessa, still didn't do anything a ways in, and the writing wasn't as great. I was thinking of giving up, but finally Vanessa saw a cute guy. The chemistry was nice for a tiny bit, but nothing happened. Nothing happened for a LONG time, then the plot got a little interesting. I kept reading because I thought something good had to happen. But I was really disappointed.

Okay, without making this too personal and without giving away too many spoilers, I'll admit that I REALLY wanted to like this story because it's parallel to my life. I thought Vanessa and I would have a lot in common. But we don't. This is billed as a comedy romance, but it's not funny. Not even a little bit. And Vanessa started to annoy me from the very beginning because she had so many internal snarky comments about her sister-in-law. Some of those snarky comments were over the line for me. Vanessa seems like the kind of characters who's nice, but in reality she's a narcissistic Mean Girl. So, yeah, I got really frustrated with her. Cameron, her love interest, is amazing. But because he's so great I really wondered what he saw in her. Plus she's skittish and scared of everything. Granted, I understand why she's this way. But I don't want to read about it. I want to read about people eventually overcoming their fears. Vanessa was too narcissistic.

THEN there were a few minor details that a family attorney would never approve of and never say. Making it difficult to keep reading.

I so enjoyed reading Starting Over by Barbie Bohrman. The characters and storyline were refreshingly different--a single mother of an eighth grade girl, starting to date for the first time since her boyfriend dumped her while pregnant, a bit unsure if she should start off doing so with her daughter's science teacher.

But he's got a whole "Professor Indiana Jones" vibe going on, and she has a really hard time resisting. As well she should--I mean, Professor Jones! Plus, he wears absolutely adorkable science-themed t-shirts in his downtime. And loves Star Wars. Really, how could any woman resist?

Though Vanessa tries. And tries. And tries some more. It did get a bit frustrating at times--honestly, Cameron's a saint to have persevered. Vanessa has all kinds of reasons why she can't give her burgeoning relationship with Cameron a fighting chance--fortunately, he manages to counter most of them, refusing to give up, and Vanessa herself does take one giant step forward at one point, which results in a memorable night together.

Unfortunately, it's at this point that her ex decides to try and get to know his daughter--finally. Vanessa doesn't take the stress of the situation well, and in fact hides the whole thing from her daughter Josie, Cameron, and even her own parents. Clearly, this method isn't going to be effective, but Vanessa just can't see it until it all blows up in her face, and her new relationship ends up being a casualty. Fortunately, she does finally find the strength to deal with what's going on and start making choices for herself as a woman and not just as a parent--it was a long time coming, to be sure.
