Such a well done novella! So much story packed into it. And the angst, oh the angst! My heart hurt for Lucy so many times in the story. It's not very often an author can get me to feel SO MUCH for a character. And I really want to try Lucy's Pfeffernusse!

Unexpected humor kept popping up amongst all the heartbreak:

"Every time you say you hate Christmas, one of Santa's elves explores." "Shut up and give me a fry."

"Enjoying the holiday traditions while terrorizing you all at the same time. It doesn't get any better than this."

Lucy tilted her head, considering. "I don't think I've ever consciously thought of the word breeder in my life. Oh, wait. I just did."

When you get to the "A year from now, month from now, week from now, day from now" speech...ohhh it was so lovely I highlighted it and read it 3 times.

At the end of the book make sure you go to the author's website to ready a nice long epilogue and the letter Sullivan wrote to his buddy's children at Christmas. Makes the story even better.

Ends at 96% on my Kindle.
Stand alone novella (I think, although I see other books by the author set in Bitterhorn)

Good gravy! Stacy Gail knows how to deliver an emotional punch to the gut. Wow. I spent a good quarter of this book teary-eyed and sniffly. And considering how I refuse to acknowledge that I'm a crier, that says a lot.

The push and pull of Lucy and Sully's relationship was hard. His amnesia is particularly painful because it's Lucy he can't remember. Her stubborn courage in trying to pretend like everything's a-okay when she's screaming on the inside got to me. I admired Lucy. I liked her. Her pain at loving someone who couldn't remember her was vivid and heartbreaking.

Which isn't to say that Sully's issues were any less compelling. Not being able to remember someone who used to be such a huge part of his life bothers him. He's drawn to Lucy despite not remembering, but it's really Lucy's pain at being forgotten that laid me low here.

Beautifully written and sweetly romantic as Sully tries to rediscover his past with Lucy while she tries to hide from it. Have a box of tissues nearby when you read this one. You'll need it.

I received Starting from Scratch in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This short story was packed full of emotion. I picked up an emotion packed novella last Christmas too. Maybe this will turn into my new tradition? If so I need to brace myself.

I can’t imagine being in Lucy’s position. The love of her life seems to remember everything about his past except for her. How do you handle something like that? Lucy hides her pain well, but she has her moments. She also has her own little defense tactics. Coming face to face with Sully kind of short circuits all of that though.

I wouldn’t want to be in Sully’s position either. Even though he’s the source of Lucy’s pain, it’s impossible to be mad at him. Frustrated yes, mad no. He’s trying to piece his life back together and the holes all lead back to Lucy. The situation seems impossible.

I liked the dynamic between the supporting characters when they were with Lucy and Sully. I loved Coe. He was the perfect overly protective best friend. I liked Sully’s dad, but I got frustrated with him too. I felt like maybe he could have helped Sully understand more, but I also understand why he didn’t. There was a lot of back story concerning Sully’s recovery that wasn’t detailed. Honestly, throughout the story I just felt bad for them all.

This story was as heartwarming as it was heartbreaking at times. The perfect balance. It was totally worth the tears. It was also the first Stacy Gail book I’ve read, but I seriously doubt it will be the last.

Cried a lot reading this. I am one of those that just feel everything I read. Deeply. Maybe because I'm a Marine Mom and my son's tour really got to me a lot so I just took this story to heart. Glad by the end it all worked out but it sure was a rough tear filled road. There was a moment that I actually gasped in shock/pain for the heroine. Some words hurt deep. The sweetness for this book came in the form of the cookies ..the love story became sweet by the end. Written passionately and flowed extremely well I do intend to continue on with this series.

This was a sweet holiday story that was good, but not great.

I really liked Lucy as a heroine. She was extremely strong. She's one of those people that's gotten a whole lot of crap thrown at her, but she's never admitted defeat. She keeps coming back fro more.

Sullivan is a sexy hero, one who wants to do the right thing, even if it might not be the best thing to do at the time. He tries really hard to spare Lucy from a life where he's damaged, but it sort of backfires. He doesn't remember anything and, while it's noble that he doesn't want her to be affected by that, she wants nothing more than to be with him.

The plot is pretty solid. There were lots of different little things that helped bring them together and helps Sullivan slowly begin remembering things that he'd thought lost forever. They had great chemistry and it was quite believable.

I look forward to finding other books from this author.
