I'm Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom: A Novel Hardcover – September 24, 2024
THE INSTANT USA TODAY BESTSELLER
A standalone darkly humorous thriller set in modern America's age of anxiety, by New York Times bestselling author Jason Pargin.
Outside Los Angeles, a driver pulls up to find a young woman sitting on a large black box. She offers him $200,000 cash to transport her and that box across the country, to Washington, DC.
But there are rules:
He cannot look inside the box.
He cannot ask questions.
He cannot tell anyone.
They must leave immediately.
He must leave all trackable devices behind.
As these eccentric misfits hit the road, rumors spread on social media that the box is part of a carefully orchestrated terror attack intended to plunge the USA into civil war.
The truth promises to be even stranger, and may change how you see the world.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"A madcap thriller with sharp social commentary from Pargin." - William Earl, Variety
"Strident and timely, the dark humor of this wild standalone adventure from Pargin evokes satirists like Kurt Vonnegut and Douglas Adams for a new age... It’s a raucous roller-coaster ride." ― Publisher's Weekly
"A comical road trip that may end in mass destruction...Wacky, thoughtful, and fun." ― Kirkus Reviews
"A road trip through America that is equal parts hilarious and terrifying. Jason understands humanity better than most, and it’s inspiring that his diagnosis is ultimately optimistic." ― Daniel O'Brien, Senior Writer, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
"I was hooked from the first page. If I'm honest, from the first sentence or two. Jason has a rare gift for delivering High Weirdness coated in a sticky layer of real life, deeply relatable shit that forces you to see yourself in whatever weirdo or maniac he introduces. It's a rare gift, but he's got a lot of those. You should read this book." ― Robert Evans, Host of Behind the Bastards
“Jason Pargin’s curse is a brain that can make sense of what we’re all living through. His gift is an ability to take the key elements -- paranoia, screen addiction, deep loneliness, fear of the end times -- and hocus-pocus them into a comic thriller. Illuminatus! for an even weirder time, and with much cooler cars.” ― David Weigel, national political reporter, Semafor
“Jason Pargin has a unique grasp on all the ways our relationship with information technology has warped our brains and our society as a whole. This latest work is a fun, socially relevant, and propulsive work of satire. Well, mostly satire: The way its characters fabricate dangerous narratives out of whatever information they can access is terrifyingly true to life. I felt personally called out a dozen times and I loved every page of it.” ― Matthew Kitchen, Editor, Chron
"[A] provocative, rambunctious, comedic cultural rant of a novel that’s fueled by internet paranoia, conspiracy theories and outlandish action scenes. Think Ernest Cline’s “Ready Player One”'s pacing with Carl Hiaasen-like social commentary on our digital age." -The Minnesota Star Tribune

- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseJason Pargin’s I Think I’m Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom is a bold departure from his signature blend of science fiction and fantasy, taking readers on a satirical deep dive into the toxic underpinnings of modern culture. Known for his ability to weave surreal humor with biting social commentary, Pargin has outdone himself in crafting a comedy-action adventure that feels both absurdly outlandish and eerily plausible.
What makes this novel stand out is its fearless exploration of the human condition in the context of late-stage capitalism. It’s as if Pargin took a page from Gabor Maté’s The Myth of Normal and asked, “What if our collective insecurities and unprocessed traumas were not just personal struggles, but the actual harbingers of societal collapse?” The result is a world so familiar and yet so exaggerated, it forces readers to confront uncomfortable truths about themselves and their surroundings while laughing through the discomfort.
The titular “black box of doom” is both literal and metaphorical, serving as a brilliant narrative device to explore how consumerism, social media, and the commodification of identity are driving humanity toward its own undoing. Through a diverse cast of flawed yet endearing characters, Pargin unpacks the ways in which our individual and collective anxieties are exploited for profit, creating a cycle that feels both tragic and darkly comedic.
Pargin’s signature humor remains intact, with sharp wit and outrageous scenarios that will leave readers in stitches, even as they recognize the sobering truths beneath the surface. The action sequences are as fast-paced and chaotic as ever, but they’re grounded in a narrative that feels deeply relevant to the times we live in.
I Think I’m Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom is a masterclass in genre-blending, seamlessly combining satire, action, and poignant social commentary. It’s a novel that entertains, provokes, and lingers long after the final page. For fans of Pargin’s previous work and newcomers alike, this is a must-read that showcases his evolution as a writer willing to tackle the complexities of modern life with unflinching honesty and a healthy dose of humor.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseSadly this is not one of the Dave-John horror-magic novels or even one of his sci-fi book, which if what I enjoy. There was a sappy lesson about social media and mob mentality.
Overall it was funny enough and made you think, but honestly without the gross out humor, magic, superheroes, and the like, it's not all that different from a lot of other books out there and frankly let me down with a pretty predictable ending. I mean the box could have had something actually interesting in it that negated all the expectations about it being nothing or some moral about jumping to conclusions and instead revealed that the crazies on the net were right to be watching, but nope. Sadly it's just another morality tale about being a freaking grownup, like that's anything to aspire to.
Overall not bad if you're looking for a good read, but not the crazy off the wall stuff I like from this author that actually surprises me at times. I'm sure he's getting tired of the crazy fans insisting he teach them the occult secrets of the universe, but honestly I'm looking for an escape from reality, not something that just holds up yet another mirror to it and reminds me.
Let me know when the next one comes out hopefully with something less predictable in the plot.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe author is a good story teller and paces the book well. Most of the books I read are either free from the library or included in a subscription service. I paid for this book and received my money's worth.
Some of the black box of doom ideas will certainly be sticky with me.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed this book, it's a little cheesy at points, it has moments where it feels like an 80s road trip Deus Ex Machina side quest, and while I do believe that was the point, I think those moments will also be To Taste, and might shake you a little out of suspension. There are also some conversations that feel a little bit like that one argument you're having with yourself in the shower about the state of the world, but overall, I really liked this book. It's an incredible bait and switch, and plays well with the overarching themes of perception, social connection, paranoia and conspiracy. The characters are all endearing, and they bounce off of each other effectively.
This is a book with a very clear message and a very clear Idea it wants to get across, and while you might expect it to come down hard on either side of the 'internet bad'/'internet good' debate, I think it manages to pretty subtly take a more nuanced position, while also fully understanding the sort of audience it's playing to- If you or a loved one has ever been Terminally Online or understands what that means, the book is speaking to and about you. For all the good and ill that implies.
Also the mix of POV narration with reddit posts, twitch comment feeds, forum threads and so forth make for a really fun narration style, the story moves fast but it's not so breakneck you feel dizzy.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseJason Pargin has created a story that, despite his protestations to the contrary, feels very much like the real world, except funnier. It is about how a situation that is fairly odd to begin with can escalate into a full-blown national emergency because of the speculation, fear and outrage of random people on the internet. The characters are well-rounded enough that they are recognizably human and not caricatures, and yet their personal experiences and obsessions keep the plot moving from near-disaster to near-disaster to real disaster with plenty of laughs. It is interesting that the person who at first seems to be the magic pixie dream girl is actually the voice of reason. Pargin makes some thought-provoking points while magically turning a satire of today's state of affairs into a wonderful way to get away from the state of the world for several hours.

Its a commentary on todays gender culture war. As always jason has some interesting things to say. Definitely more agenda driven than his other works, so a lot of conversations. Sometimes it feels like the story takes a backseat as the two protagonists debate while driving across america. Less cartoony than his other books, but still very fun and not that serious but at the same time very smart and well thought out. The ending is satisfying as always. He does not miss, this guy.

The author posts very neat short videos on social media about all kinds of subjects, and I’m always happy to see him in my feed.
He also wrote this VERY enjoyable book: truly contemporary, sometimes funny, sometimes depressing, often informative, always entertaining.
An interesting author to follow and support: RECOMMENDED.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe dialogue was thought provoking. At times it felt like Ether was talking right to me, trying to snap me out of my black-box induced depression. The depictions of Reddit behaviour, while exaggerated, felt familiar and reminded me why I hate going on there.
