Startle Garden Paperback – January 21, 2017
Patti Estep, Garden Matter - As a home gardener for over 30 years I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to get their fingers into the garden. I am amazed at a how easy to follow the book is and just how comprehensive the information covers. Everything from planning, planting, harvesting and yearly maintenance. The checklists, and extra fill in journal areas are also a great addition, helping the gardener stay on track. Anyone who follows this book would surely have a startle garden that they would cherish.
Joyce Olson, At Home With Jemma - Carole West outlines six key observations that are often overlooked in creating a Startle Garden. Each chapter is carefully organized and brimming with useful diagrams, tips, eye catching photographs and step by step instructions. I am a hands on learner and I love the workbook approach that she has used. This is certainly a one of a kind gardening book and will be a welcome addition to the novice or seasoned gardener's Library. Anyone who enjoys gardening should have a copy as a reference, as it is a sure fire step to gardening with success!
Dara Ekanger, Senior Editor Molly Green Magazine - Gardens are always beautiful, but some just "startle" you with their brilliance! That's the point of this delightful Book from Carole West. With a little bit of planning, you can have a garden that is not only practical and productive for the body, but inspiring and nourishing for the soul.
The book starts out explaining the origin of the "Startle Garden" and gets you going on selecting the right soil, location, and design for your own creation. The author provides details on options for raised beds that you might not have thought of, important steps for preparing and maintaining rich soil (including fertilizer options), and choosing proper plants and flowers for your area. She then provides valuable information on seed selection, germination, and transplanting care.
Chapter 9, "Adding Garden Flair," is where you get the ideas for personalizing your garden and adding the "fun, artistic items that incorporate personality beyond the planting zone." Truthfully, I've never been that creative in my garden before, but the pictures and ideas she incorporates are so inspiring! I'm going to give them a try this spring.
This book is just what budding and experienced gardeners will enjoy reading during the dark, cold days of winter while we're dreaming of spring. Get some inspiration for the upcoming season and pick up this beautiful book by Carole West. It's time to start planning your own Startle Garden!

I've been gardening for all of my adult life, but some of the concepts in this book are total game changers. Composting doesn't have to be a complex system of expensive equipment and careful management. Carole's no-nonsense approach (which I've been using since I first read about it on her blog two years ago) yields amazing results - with very little effort.
Carole shares her time-tested methods for planning, constructing low-maintenance beds, preparing to plant, caring for soil, choosing what to grow, starting seeds, transplanting, adding flair to your garden, enjoying the fruits of your labor, and caring for your beds throughout the year. Worksheets and checklists are included throughout the book so you can plan while you read.
My favorite chapter from the book shows how Carole adds flair to her garden beds by adding decor pieces she acquires or makes, and shares a step-by-step tutorial for creating your own unique signs to add personality right in your garden. These elements add an even greater appeal to a beautiful garden, creating an atmosphere you'll not only love, but will be attractive and inspiring to others as well.
Packed with gorgeous full-color photographs from her own garden, Carole shows anyone just how easy and achievable it is to create your own "Startle Garden"!
